Cheltenham International Meeting - Saturday 14th December

Maximo Park a band I have always rated wrote the song 'Going Missing' and I have to say I've been gone a little while from my blog but have enjoyed the start to our beautiful, transcendent and unparallelled national hunt season.

Watching the runners from the mighty powerful training  yards has come to fruition in recent weeks with the likes of Nicholls' landing across the card winners on Saturday and now Henderson and Hobbs all starting to move in the right direction. Yet, please remember that some of the smaller training establishments with a smaller string of horses still have a big role to play and I wouldn't be put off by backing the Kirby's, Cases', Burke's or Fry's of this world. All know the time of day when it comes to training fit, well schooled horses.

12.10pm JCB Triumph Hurdle Trial (Juvenile Hurdle) 2m 1f

Firstly, these trials can be a good precursor for future grade one events and this race without question is worth scribbling the result into the proverbial notebook. Conversely, results and performances within this race may result in following a (for want of a better phrase) 'nearly man' kind. This sounds like a paradox but it has paid dividends when looking at the runners up rather than the winners. A case in point would be the Paul Nicholl's trained Hinterland who finished second in 2011 and has now gone on to better things. COMMISSIONED for the John Ferguson yard is a training establishment which quite simply has gone from strength to strength, a trainer that likes to purchase  flat pedigree's and who can blame him. This Authorized colt ran three times on the level and ran progressively winning two of his three starts running over the 1m 6f at Musselborough on his final run in October of this year. My expectation is that a market check would be in order for his hurdling bow but hailing from a proven yard who undoubtedly will have him fit and schooled to perfection seems worth highlighting.

13.15pm Jenny Mould Memorial Handicap Chase 2m 110y

With Nicholl's v Henderson a common place battle for the NH trainers championship and with the former in terrifying form I really believe it wont be long until we see the Seven Barrow's yard start to fire (also potentially terrifying). With this in mind I believe FRENCH OPERA at a tantalizing each way price could be the one here. The boxes are firmly ticked on current ground conditions and he has won at the Cleeve Hill track on two occasions and usually puts up a good performance over the two mile trip. More importantly his current mark of 150 is certainly workable, well within the realms of possibility as this Bering colt took this race back in 2009 off a three pound lower mark (147). Another positive is that his last run would of brought him on, finishing 2nd in the Amlin Chase (which counts for little as only two went to post) that form is irrelevant to a degree but seeing that he jumped right handed throughout illustrates a clear liking to running left handed. FRENCH OPERA is a solid jumper and can travel like the best in the business over this trip. Solid each way selection in my view.

14.25pm Stewart Family Gold Cup (Handicap Chase Grade 3) 2m 5f

SALUT FLO springs out of the page here and may indeed be better than a handicapper even as an eight year old. Lightly raced, progressive type who may show plenty and can take this. David Pipe trained him to perfection at the Cheltenham festival in 2012 when he led from pillar to post and landed the Byrne Group Plate. Obviously, you can find holes in that form, a long lay off which hasn't seen him run since and is hard to assess in terms of how he will favour after such a long time off the track, it also maybe true that he failed to beat any superstars. Though, I wouldn't read too much into that as David Pipe is a shrewd operator, he knows the time of day when it comes to getting horses right on the day.His bloodline has produced some excellent top level horses including Quel Esprit, Quito De La Roque and  the progressive Sametegal so he comes from a solid jumping family. You can also argue that the handicapper is quite literally guessing as to how good he might be, a mark of 144 looks a fair assumption but it could also prove to be extremely lenient. Is he better than that? I think he could well be, watch the market!

Grand National Selections.

How I'm feeling about the upcoming Grand National Neptune Collognes - 2012 Grand National hero This time of year never fails to stir the soul both tangibly and metaphorically. After the sun peeps it's head out from amongst the clouds, after the temperature rises, after the first buds are seen on the trees, after the restoration of vitamin d in our blood, after the taste of a crisp cider on a warm day hits the tongue, after many months of wearing trousers I can finally air the paler than white limbs of mine, after...after...after all that April is the month when a new grand national winner is crowned king of the toughest steeplechase in the world. I can safely say without hesitation that this years national is probably the most competitive yet, the handicapper has given everything a chance this year and I'm happy with the three selections that I'll be following. A real Christmas Cracker! Kempton Park Boxing Day.

The festive season has begun for me, sitting down with my Santa hat, a mince pie and a pint of guinness all points to a very content and relaxed feel to this weeks blogg. Merry Christmas everyone and boy we got some racing to look forward too. It's important to remember that with over three months or so before Cheltenham the trainers, owners, jocks and all us normal folk are looking forward to seeing a magnificient build up and thats why Boxing day at Kempton park is the place to be. On with the card... 12.50 Kempton 2m Hurdle It was nice to tip TETLAMI last time out at Sandown and I certainly wont be deserting this five year old just yet. Looked a picture in the paddock at Sandown, ran on strongly in the finish and will love softer ground than some of these if indeed it is on the softer side. Nicky Henderson showed his class in training this one to victory after a long lay off. I believe another win is possible and with Barry Geraghty on board I'm full of optimism. 1.2...

Royal Ascot Preview 2013

The centrepiece of our flat season is almost upon us, this time of year when our thoroughbreds have illustrated enough talent on the racecourse they now gain a chance at landing a big prize at Her Majesty's Royal Ascot. My first preview blog of the meeting quite logical focuses on the first day and it's my pleasure to outline my thoughts on the week ahead starting tonight. The main news this week regarding Henry Cecil is extremely sad, as many have mentioned with wonderful prose regarding the publics favourite, a horse handler who cared for his animals with the midas touch and a trainer who had the ambition and determination to never say 'enoughs enough' even when he was down to around 40 horses in the early 2000's or the pressure and stress in his private life. He is and will always be remembered as a true gentleman and a phenomenal trainer. It's also worth noting that he had an absolute terryifyingly good record at Royal Ascot and it just wont be the same w...
