Royal Ascot Day 2 - Wednesday 18th June 2013

Royal Ascot - Day 2

14.30pm Jersey Stakes (Group 3) (Class 1) 7f

Favourites have an atrocious record in this race, no win in ten years. This maybe down to the nature of the race where the step up in either trip or class can find many of these out. But I think the class horse with excellent form in the book goes to GALE FORCE TEN. This Oasis Dream bay colt will take all the beating on ground that will suit and the step up in trip will also be to his advantage. GALE FORCE TEN  has had three starts this season, he won in convincing style at Dundalk on the polytrack back in April then was seen to be staying on in the French Guineas, finishing 4th against arguably the best horses any of the others in this race have come up against. He then went on to compete in the Irish 2,000 Guineas finishing 2nd behind Magician again that's strong form as Trading Leather has gone on and won since. Consequently, I believe Aiden O'Brien and his talented son Joseph will strike again and strike when the iron is truly hot.

15.05pm Duke of Cambridge Stakes (Fillies Group 2) (Str) (Class 1) 1m

Many form lines cross over in this race as some of the British raiders have raced against each other and because of this I believe we have a cracking race on our hands. However, getting caught up in the context of those form lines may prove to be irrelevant (maybe). As I'm tipping the French raider here SAKIYLA. Her run last time out behind a potentially classy horse Don Bosco at the Paris racetrack Saint Cloud is well worth highlighting. Don Bosco has ran in some of the top level races in France finishing second in the Darcourt Stakes at Longchamp and indeed ran in the Prix D Ispahan which illustrates just how high he is rated. Consequently, SAKIYLA may hold the most progressive profile and is indeed a beautfully bred filly by Oasis Dream, the distance wont be a problem so it's only the ground that may prove to be a slight worry. However, her form is good and was highly tried in the Godolphin Mile on Dubai World Cup night where she finished a commendable 4th. She has a live each way chance.

15.45pm Prince of Wales Stakes (British Champion Series) (Class1) 1m 2f

I'm probably not alone in thinking this but AL KEEZAM v Camelot is the matchbet here and it's a case of thinking one will either hold it's form or the other will strike back and make it 1-1 a win each. I'm afraid I'm solidly in the formers camp. AL KEEZAM hailing from the Roger Charlton yard, who is in extremely terrific form will find this his race to lose. An impressive, progressive, top class five year old who has a lightly turn of foot and travels extremely well in his races. The ground, trip and track will suit him down to the ground. He took his last two races in terrifc style and I expect him to do the same again here. Mark my words he is a superstar in the making and he simply wont be beaten over this trip!

Grand National Selections.

How I'm feeling about the upcoming Grand National Neptune Collognes - 2012 Grand National hero This time of year never fails to stir the soul both tangibly and metaphorically. After the sun peeps it's head out from amongst the clouds, after the temperature rises, after the first buds are seen on the trees, after the restoration of vitamin d in our blood, after the taste of a crisp cider on a warm day hits the tongue, after many months of wearing trousers I can finally air the paler than white limbs of mine, after...after...after all that April is the month when a new grand national winner is crowned king of the toughest steeplechase in the world. I can safely say without hesitation that this years national is probably the most competitive yet, the handicapper has given everything a chance this year and I'm happy with the three selections that I'll be following. A real Christmas Cracker! Kempton Park Boxing Day.

The festive season has begun for me, sitting down with my Santa hat, a mince pie and a pint of guinness all points to a very content and relaxed feel to this weeks blogg. Merry Christmas everyone and boy we got some racing to look forward too. It's important to remember that with over three months or so before Cheltenham the trainers, owners, jocks and all us normal folk are looking forward to seeing a magnificient build up and thats why Boxing day at Kempton park is the place to be. On with the card... 12.50 Kempton 2m Hurdle It was nice to tip TETLAMI last time out at Sandown and I certainly wont be deserting this five year old just yet. Looked a picture in the paddock at Sandown, ran on strongly in the finish and will love softer ground than some of these if indeed it is on the softer side. Nicky Henderson showed his class in training this one to victory after a long lay off. I believe another win is possible and with Barry Geraghty on board I'm full of optimism. 1.2...

Royal Ascot Preview 2013

The centrepiece of our flat season is almost upon us, this time of year when our thoroughbreds have illustrated enough talent on the racecourse they now gain a chance at landing a big prize at Her Majesty's Royal Ascot. My first preview blog of the meeting quite logical focuses on the first day and it's my pleasure to outline my thoughts on the week ahead starting tonight. The main news this week regarding Henry Cecil is extremely sad, as many have mentioned with wonderful prose regarding the publics favourite, a horse handler who cared for his animals with the midas touch and a trainer who had the ambition and determination to never say 'enoughs enough' even when he was down to around 40 horses in the early 2000's or the pressure and stress in his private life. He is and will always be remembered as a true gentleman and a phenomenal trainer. It's also worth noting that he had an absolute terryifyingly good record at Royal Ascot and it just wont be the same w...
