York Ebor Meeting - Day 2

Frankel you machine what an absolute beast of a horse, I was taken back by just how easily he won that race and from that evidence a step up to 1m 4f is well within his remit and what a spectacle it would be to see him in the Arc. He is quite simply the best horse in the world!. On with the York card day 2... 2.00pm Premier Yearling Stakes 6f A cracking win fund will go to the smartest two year old in this excellent race. Some line up here being lightly raced, others have been on the go for a little longer. With 20 going to post I'm really struggling to split three from my selections the horses in question are Hototo, Shahdoroba and New Pearl. The latter in this case appeals the most. David Brown has a very good two year old on his hands in the shape of NEW PEARL. I have been watching his races closely and it seems to me that this firm ground will play into his strengths, if he settles well then this grey gelding will take the beating from a very good draw. His last race at Goodwood illustrated his progress he is making particularly on good ground. NEW PEARL a very interesting each way bet. 2.30pm Lowther Stakes Fillies 6f NEWFANGLED is the likely favourite but is it any wonder not least on the easy wins over this trip on his last two starts. More important than that in a way is the interesring success New Approach has been at stud, this horses sire has been in his first season and has an excellent frsr season strike rate. I'm expecting a huge run, of this horse can enjoy the ground then I'm sure he'll take all the beating at a shrt price. Progress will be made and I love the Gosden, Buick partnership. However, I'm not just gonna tip a obvious favourite because that's boring David Brown has yet another Pearl Bloodstock owned filly going to post here, a filly who won her maiden in good style in a big field. More progress is sure to come and at a nice each way price I'm sure a big run is on the cards for PEARL SEA. 3.05pm Handicap 1m Another huge field who go to post again it all depends on your selection process. I'll tell you mine it's quite simple I believe this horse is a very scopey type and will progress again in what has been a light season for this bay colt KAHRUMAN William Haggas is a very astute trainer and has the indispensable Paul Hanagan on board. He didn't get a clear run in the Britannia Stakes at Royal Ascot and that was a big learning curve for him. I like the record three year olds have in this race and this horse I'm sure will progress again over the 1 mile trip. 3.40pm Yorkshire Oaks 1m 4f What a race in prospect and although I love The Fugue she is a true superstar and I was very happy to see her win last time out in the Nassau Stakes but I'm just not sure she is at her best over the mile and a half trip. Consequently, I like SHIROCCO STAR yes Was beat her (by a neck) yes the Fugue beat her (by a shy head) but her run all the Oaks, in the Irish Oaks and the Ribblesdake Stakes were all consistent runs. She is a filly who will try all day and gives you everything. The booking of Richard Hughes is a very interesting one and I'd like to see her settled and delivered at the right time and I'm convinced thus will be Hughie Morrison's finished hour as a trainer. SHIROCCO STAR has her ground and trip.

Grand National Selections.

How I'm feeling about the upcoming Grand National Neptune Collognes - 2012 Grand National hero This time of year never fails to stir the soul both tangibly and metaphorically. After the sun peeps it's head out from amongst the clouds, after the temperature rises, after the first buds are seen on the trees, after the restoration of vitamin d in our blood, after the taste of a crisp cider on a warm day hits the tongue, after many months of wearing trousers I can finally air the paler than white limbs of mine, after...after...after all that April is the month when a new grand national winner is crowned king of the toughest steeplechase in the world. I can safely say without hesitation that this years national is probably the most competitive yet, the handicapper has given everything a chance this year and I'm happy with the three selections that I'll be following. Grand National Selections: Selection 1: Onenightinvienna  Trained by Philip Hobbs ...

A real Christmas Cracker! Kempton Park Boxing Day.

The festive season has begun for me, sitting down with my Santa hat, a mince pie and a pint of guinness all points to a very content and relaxed feel to this weeks blogg. Merry Christmas everyone and boy we got some racing to look forward too. It's important to remember that with over three months or so before Cheltenham the trainers, owners, jocks and all us normal folk are looking forward to seeing a magnificient build up and thats why Boxing day at Kempton park is the place to be. On with the card... 12.50 Kempton 2m Hurdle It was nice to tip TETLAMI last time out at Sandown and I certainly wont be deserting this five year old just yet. Looked a picture in the paddock at Sandown, ran on strongly in the finish and will love softer ground than some of these if indeed it is on the softer side. Nicky Henderson showed his class in training this one to victory after a long lay off. I believe another win is possible and with Barry Geraghty on board I'm full of optimism. 1.2...

Royal Ascot Preview 2013

The centrepiece of our flat season is almost upon us, this time of year when our thoroughbreds have illustrated enough talent on the racecourse they now gain a chance at landing a big prize at Her Majesty's Royal Ascot. My first preview blog of the meeting quite logical focuses on the first day and it's my pleasure to outline my thoughts on the week ahead starting tonight. The main news this week regarding Henry Cecil is extremely sad, as many have mentioned with wonderful prose regarding the publics favourite, a horse handler who cared for his animals with the midas touch and a trainer who had the ambition and determination to never say 'enoughs enough' even when he was down to around 40 horses in the early 2000's or the pressure and stress in his private life. He is and will always be remembered as a true gentleman and a phenomenal trainer. It's also worth noting that he had an absolute terryifyingly good record at Royal Ascot and it just wont be the same w...
