Newmarket 2000 Guineas Day Saturday May 5th 2012

The anticipation of this years guineas is both exciting and a little sentimental. It's clear that this years renewal is more competitive than lasts years race as the mighty FRANKEL had them beat four furlongs out. It's also sentimental as three years ago Sea the Stars won this race going on to win the Derby, Eclipse and the Arc an amazing feet for my horse of my generation, a horse of a lifetime a true great who's half brother Born to Sea lines up to take this coveted prize. The flat season really begins today and I can't wait!

2.00pm Makfi Suffolk Stakes 1m 1f

This race is a cracking handicap in which you try and find a horse that will handle the mark it's on, progressive and on the upgrade, likes Newmarket and handles this kind of ground. Now, looking through the trends it's easy to make a judgement on the age, four year olds have a cracking record in this race and indeed have won the last four out of five. The horse which is a nice each way price, has got course form and won't mind the cut in the ground is ASKAUD a big outsider, your correct... but what I like about this horse is its run behind Mirror Lake at Doncaster in November and her run in the Lincoln was far from disgraceful staying on in the closing stages finishing a few lengths behind Fury but has ample of weight on that horse who goes off top weight in this race. I'm having a small speculative bet as I like the trainer Scott Dixon at only 24 years old has already had ten winners in his first season as a trainer a good start for a small yard that has a pretty decent strike rate in the last 14 days.

2.30pm Jockey Club Stakes 1m 4f

This is an excellent high class renewal of ths race with some globe trotting horses lining up. The Melbourne Cup winner and the Hong Kong Vase is the horse to be on DUNADEN is one of those horses where the distance could be a 5f sprint and he would still run credibly, this bay gelding is nothing but consistent, is versatile over trip and ground conditions. The jockey Johnny Murtagh has long been a favourite of mine, he is a jockey that is also versatile in how he rides, from the front up with the pace or dropped in to deliver a late charge Johnny is the real deal this horse is an out and out stayer and with the current ground conditions you'd be mad to look anywhere else. DUNADEN the one.

3.10pm 2000 Guineas 1m

The classic that many trainers would love to win, this race is setup to be a truly excellent renewal of this race. Camelot has been the standout favourite throughout the winter and I have my doubts with a tiny bit of deja vu attached to a Racing Post winner hailing from the Aiden O Brien stable, didn't we have this all before with St Nicholas Abbey? Look at his three year old season, not the best and I have big reservations that a mile on this ground is a big negative. The other thing to bear in mind is that Timeform do not believe he is the highest rating horse, that goes to Trumpet Major. Consequently, with all that in mind i won't be in the Camelot camp, instead I'm looking at CASPAR NETSCHER if this was trained by O Brien, Cecil, Stoute or even Gosden then this horse would be half the price. At 28/1 currently I just can't believe his price. This Dutch Art bay colt had a terrific 2 year old season winning the Gimcrack and Mill Reef Stakes, ran a strong, solid race on soft conditions in the Greenham and will be in with not just a chance but can win this, I definitely believe it can win the Guineas. CASPAR NETSCHER has come further than some of these, has won classy races, has given his all and would love to see Alan McCabe win his first classic. I am having one other selection and that will go to Aidan O Briens second string POWER this horse has won and ran consistently at the highest level. POWER shaped well as a two year old and has every chance at a nice each way price to progress and improve to be in with a chance here a good each way proposition.

3.45pm Pearl Bloodstock Palace House Stakes

Heart ruling head or is this the most obvious pick. MARGOT DID will always goes down as a favourite filly of mine. Her win in the Nunthorpe nearly brought me to tears. Hayley Turner has a great affinity with this Excel and Exceed bay filly. MARGOT DID has an optimum trip which is over 5 furlongs, she will love the ground as a bit of cut suits here. Michael Bells stable is now starting to fire and I see a big run on the cards for my favourite filly sprinter.

Good Lck if your having a punt!

Grand National Selections.

How I'm feeling about the upcoming Grand National Neptune Collognes - 2012 Grand National hero This time of year never fails to stir the soul both tangibly and metaphorically. After the sun peeps it's head out from amongst the clouds, after the temperature rises, after the first buds are seen on the trees, after the restoration of vitamin d in our blood, after the taste of a crisp cider on a warm day hits the tongue, after many months of wearing trousers I can finally air the paler than white limbs of mine, after...after...after all that April is the month when a new grand national winner is crowned king of the toughest steeplechase in the world. I can safely say without hesitation that this years national is probably the most competitive yet, the handicapper has given everything a chance this year and I'm happy with the three selections that I'll be following. Grand National Selections: Selection 1: Onenightinvienna  Trained by Philip Hobbs ...

A real Christmas Cracker! Kempton Park Boxing Day.

The festive season has begun for me, sitting down with my Santa hat, a mince pie and a pint of guinness all points to a very content and relaxed feel to this weeks blogg. Merry Christmas everyone and boy we got some racing to look forward too. It's important to remember that with over three months or so before Cheltenham the trainers, owners, jocks and all us normal folk are looking forward to seeing a magnificient build up and thats why Boxing day at Kempton park is the place to be. On with the card... 12.50 Kempton 2m Hurdle It was nice to tip TETLAMI last time out at Sandown and I certainly wont be deserting this five year old just yet. Looked a picture in the paddock at Sandown, ran on strongly in the finish and will love softer ground than some of these if indeed it is on the softer side. Nicky Henderson showed his class in training this one to victory after a long lay off. I believe another win is possible and with Barry Geraghty on board I'm full of optimism. 1.2...

Royal Ascot Preview 2013

The centrepiece of our flat season is almost upon us, this time of year when our thoroughbreds have illustrated enough talent on the racecourse they now gain a chance at landing a big prize at Her Majesty's Royal Ascot. My first preview blog of the meeting quite logical focuses on the first day and it's my pleasure to outline my thoughts on the week ahead starting tonight. The main news this week regarding Henry Cecil is extremely sad, as many have mentioned with wonderful prose regarding the publics favourite, a horse handler who cared for his animals with the midas touch and a trainer who had the ambition and determination to never say 'enoughs enough' even when he was down to around 40 horses in the early 2000's or the pressure and stress in his private life. He is and will always be remembered as a true gentleman and a phenomenal trainer. It's also worth noting that he had an absolute terryifyingly good record at Royal Ascot and it just wont be the same w...
