Chester Festival Day 2 Thursday 10th May 2012

An electrifying start to the festival as my first tip landed the spoils and all others ran very credible races in ground which really doesn't suit the majority of these thoroughbreds. Even so the Chester Cup was a very intriguing race to watch, particularly as the stalls were non existent to start this staying trip. I have to say I will be backing all those tipped again.

Marwan Koukash loves a winner here at Chester as illustrated by the amount of entries he has over the next couple of days but even he must of been taken back by his 50/1 shot good morning star who stayed on beautifully to land the Cheshire Oaks.

On with the card...

1.35pm Handicap 1m 2f

This race can go to the likely favourite FLAG OFFICER, 'a sigh'...rolling your eyes? Well sometimes the form looks rock solid and it's quite simple really. FLAG OFFICER has a piece of form which sticks out from the rest. His second over the same trip to the excellent Henry Cecil trained Sea Moon who has gone on to run in high class group 1 races. If this horse is fit first time out this season then his mark will increase and will prove that progress will be made. I can only see progress, progress, progress.

2.05pm Huxley Stakes 1m 2f 75y

Saeed Bin Suroor could have a double on the card here, my selection falls in the same vein as my first selection. HUNTERS LIGHT has form on soft ground, is progressing and is on the upgrade. My only concern is fitness but the trainer is excellent at placing his horses in races to suit first time out and I believe if fit this Dubawi colt will take all the beating. Double flying dismount from Frankie is on the cards!

2.35pm Chester Vase 1m 4f 66y

John Oxx will forever be a trainer I hold dear to my heart, the season of 2009 when Sea the Stars came onto the scene was truly special and I'm very lucky to have seen him win the Derby and the Arc de Triomphe. He also has his stable in mesmerising form, the form of the stable in the last two weeks is close to a 50% strike rate, 9 runners 4 winners. CALL TO BATTLE has won a listed race at Leopardstown and in his last run had Dr Livingston well held who lines up again here. The ground isn't a worry and the extra two furlongs will be the making of this Kings Best colt.

3.05pm Handicap 7f 122y

GLENN MOSS trained by Charlie Hills would be just the tonic for a yard who lost a good young prospect in Gray Pearl who was involved in a fatal accident on Sunday in the 1000 guineas. This Moss Vale colt has been consistent and ran beautifully over the 7 furlong trip at Kempton last time out. As long as he can relax and not pull then I'm sure a big run is on the cards.

Good luck if your having a punt!

Grand National Selections.

How I'm feeling about the upcoming Grand National Neptune Collognes - 2012 Grand National hero This time of year never fails to stir the soul both tangibly and metaphorically. After the sun peeps it's head out from amongst the clouds, after the temperature rises, after the first buds are seen on the trees, after the restoration of vitamin d in our blood, after the taste of a crisp cider on a warm day hits the tongue, after many months of wearing trousers I can finally air the paler than white limbs of mine, after...after...after all that April is the month when a new grand national winner is crowned king of the toughest steeplechase in the world. I can safely say without hesitation that this years national is probably the most competitive yet, the handicapper has given everything a chance this year and I'm happy with the three selections that I'll be following. Grand National Selections: Selection 1: Onenightinvienna  Trained by Philip Hobbs ...

A real Christmas Cracker! Kempton Park Boxing Day.

The festive season has begun for me, sitting down with my Santa hat, a mince pie and a pint of guinness all points to a very content and relaxed feel to this weeks blogg. Merry Christmas everyone and boy we got some racing to look forward too. It's important to remember that with over three months or so before Cheltenham the trainers, owners, jocks and all us normal folk are looking forward to seeing a magnificient build up and thats why Boxing day at Kempton park is the place to be. On with the card... 12.50 Kempton 2m Hurdle It was nice to tip TETLAMI last time out at Sandown and I certainly wont be deserting this five year old just yet. Looked a picture in the paddock at Sandown, ran on strongly in the finish and will love softer ground than some of these if indeed it is on the softer side. Nicky Henderson showed his class in training this one to victory after a long lay off. I believe another win is possible and with Barry Geraghty on board I'm full of optimism. 1.2...

Royal Ascot Preview 2013

The centrepiece of our flat season is almost upon us, this time of year when our thoroughbreds have illustrated enough talent on the racecourse they now gain a chance at landing a big prize at Her Majesty's Royal Ascot. My first preview blog of the meeting quite logical focuses on the first day and it's my pleasure to outline my thoughts on the week ahead starting tonight. The main news this week regarding Henry Cecil is extremely sad, as many have mentioned with wonderful prose regarding the publics favourite, a horse handler who cared for his animals with the midas touch and a trainer who had the ambition and determination to never say 'enoughs enough' even when he was down to around 40 horses in the early 2000's or the pressure and stress in his private life. He is and will always be remembered as a true gentleman and a phenomenal trainer. It's also worth noting that he had an absolute terryifyingly good record at Royal Ascot and it just wont be the same w...
