Chester Festival Day 1 Wednesday 9th May

The Chester meeting is always a highlight in early May, it's a real racecourse steeped in history and is so important to the race seasons calendar. This tight circular course can play into the hands of many a racehorse and certainly some trainers have a terrific record at this track. One key variable is the draw which should be looked at carefully before each race.

On with the card...

1.35pm 5f 16y Stakes

I'm interested in the two Bill Turner horses, his yard are enjoying a good time of things at present and I'm finding it difficult to split the pair of them. I suppose the only difference is in the prices. Both horses have been progressive throughout their starts with the ground causing me no worries at Chester. However, the form which reads best of all is that of Lothian Falcon and ALL FUR COAT the latter lost to the former last time out but Lothian Falcon looks doubtful to turn up and ALL FUR COAT looked better treated even if they met here again. The speed figures look good over this the minimal trip. A nice filly who has the weight allowance a good each way proposition.

2.05pm 1m 3f 75y Cheshire Oaks

Nice quality fillies go to post here and Aiden O Brien certainly has his horses in fine form winning both classics this weekend and he also has won the last for renewals of this race but Becausebecausebecause is a terrible name for a horse let alone a filly and I'll be swerving this one not least because of the name but I'm not convinced the form stacks up.
CUBANITA however has form that has been positively franked in recent days, she ran a blinder over a mile behind Bonfire who has a very live chance for Andrew Balding (love it if he won the derby by the way) CUBANITA also ran well over the mile behind French Fifteen, losing in that day by just over a length, that form looks good as French Fifteen finished second in a tight Guineas finish this weekend. I believe this filly could set Ralph Becketts season up and could be the sable star.

2.35pm Chester Cup 2m 2f

Truly wonderful dramatic race this around a tight course, where the jockey really has to use intelligence, bravery and courage to give themselves a real chance. OVERTURN is clearly one of the most impressive dual purpose horses ever to walk on this planet. He is an out and out galloper both over hurdles and on the flat. OVERTURN won this prize 12 months ago and looks to be coming out of a good stall, will go on the ground I'm sure but that would be the nay question mark as course, trip and jockey are all positives for a tough thoroughbred over thus marathon trip. My other selection has to be NEVER CAN TELL. This beautifully bred Montjeu mare owned by Marwan Koukash ran a blinder on champions day to win the Cesarewitch. Frankie Dettori rode one of the best rides I have ever seen out in the middle of the track to land that race. This mare is an out and stayer, again running from a plum draw.

That's it for tomorrow good luck if your having a punt!

Grand National Selections.

How I'm feeling about the upcoming Grand National Neptune Collognes - 2012 Grand National hero This time of year never fails to stir the soul both tangibly and metaphorically. After the sun peeps it's head out from amongst the clouds, after the temperature rises, after the first buds are seen on the trees, after the restoration of vitamin d in our blood, after the taste of a crisp cider on a warm day hits the tongue, after many months of wearing trousers I can finally air the paler than white limbs of mine, after...after...after all that April is the month when a new grand national winner is crowned king of the toughest steeplechase in the world. I can safely say without hesitation that this years national is probably the most competitive yet, the handicapper has given everything a chance this year and I'm happy with the three selections that I'll be following. A real Christmas Cracker! Kempton Park Boxing Day.

The festive season has begun for me, sitting down with my Santa hat, a mince pie and a pint of guinness all points to a very content and relaxed feel to this weeks blogg. Merry Christmas everyone and boy we got some racing to look forward too. It's important to remember that with over three months or so before Cheltenham the trainers, owners, jocks and all us normal folk are looking forward to seeing a magnificient build up and thats why Boxing day at Kempton park is the place to be. On with the card... 12.50 Kempton 2m Hurdle It was nice to tip TETLAMI last time out at Sandown and I certainly wont be deserting this five year old just yet. Looked a picture in the paddock at Sandown, ran on strongly in the finish and will love softer ground than some of these if indeed it is on the softer side. Nicky Henderson showed his class in training this one to victory after a long lay off. I believe another win is possible and with Barry Geraghty on board I'm full of optimism. 1.2...

Royal Ascot Preview 2013

The centrepiece of our flat season is almost upon us, this time of year when our thoroughbreds have illustrated enough talent on the racecourse they now gain a chance at landing a big prize at Her Majesty's Royal Ascot. My first preview blog of the meeting quite logical focuses on the first day and it's my pleasure to outline my thoughts on the week ahead starting tonight. The main news this week regarding Henry Cecil is extremely sad, as many have mentioned with wonderful prose regarding the publics favourite, a horse handler who cared for his animals with the midas touch and a trainer who had the ambition and determination to never say 'enoughs enough' even when he was down to around 40 horses in the early 2000's or the pressure and stress in his private life. He is and will always be remembered as a true gentleman and a phenomenal trainer. It's also worth noting that he had an absolute terryifyingly good record at Royal Ascot and it just wont be the same w...
