Saturday March 24th Newbury and Lingfield

Spring is now in the air and attentions soon will be turning to the Flat season 2012. I've ordered my Timeform fifty to follow as I have done for the past few years and I'm continually impressed by this book, it really gives you the clues to be a successful punter for the season ahead. Of course we will see new juveniles coming through and I'm sure we'll have a few that capture our imagination but last years season was incredible. I saw Frankel win the guineas and champion stakes and what a horse he is, I can't wait!

On with today's cards...

Lingfield 2.25 7f

Hard to call a race of this kind with many not having a run since last season and some havent ran over the 7 furlongs either. I have always believed that this trip of 7 furlongs is more for a specialist, a horse that has ran consistently well over this trip and running at this track with solid form is important. Consequently,we do have a few positives to look at and I'm happy with my selection here PALE ORCHID, this Invincible Spirit filly is still progressing, has solid form at Lingfield winner over 5 and 6f but i liked the look of her run at Kempton in which she only lost by a shy head. Has a good solid eac way chance.

Newbury 2.40 2m 5f

This tip could be a little sentimental as I tipped her at Cheltenham and although Quevaga still won easily this grey put in a fantastic effort going up the hill at Cheltenham. KENTFORD GREY LADY has the class over these and will take all the beating. This grey mare is carrying top weight but will be very hard to beat over a trip and course that will suit this staying, determined, courageous mare. A horse I would love to own and a horse that will take all the beating.

Lingfield 3.25 Winter Derby 1m 2f

The weather today contradicts the title of this race, ran over a mile and a quarter on the all weather this takes a solid stayer with a turn of foot to match. JUNOOB is the one to be on here. JUNOOB showed an excellent turn of foot to land the winter derby trial stakes over course and distance, that performance needs to be replicated here, delivering the horse at the right time off the pace is what I expect Richard Kingsgate to be doing. Four year olds have had an excellent record in this race particularly in the last three years.

Newbury 3.40 3m 2f Handicap Chase

I really like the line up for this race, a combination of horses you'd love to see win more often. On this ground, this trip and because my selection is bottom weight I'm willing to have a gamble on ETHIOPIA Recent form is disappointing and I believe the break it's had will freshen up this horse trained by Robert Buckler. ETHIOPIA ran a blinder over three miles at Chepstow in October beating Ouzbeck who also lines up here. On that day he also beat Reve De Sivola and Five Dream both good horses in their own right. If he can reproduce that form then I'm sure he will go very close here. The weight here will make all the difference James Best is in the saddle and is claiming 7lbs which makes this a featherweight, he has won twice on this horse and I believe he is an up and coming amateur rider. At at huge price you heard it here first!!.

Good luck!

Grand National Selections.

How I'm feeling about the upcoming Grand National Neptune Collognes - 2012 Grand National hero This time of year never fails to stir the soul both tangibly and metaphorically. After the sun peeps it's head out from amongst the clouds, after the temperature rises, after the first buds are seen on the trees, after the restoration of vitamin d in our blood, after the taste of a crisp cider on a warm day hits the tongue, after many months of wearing trousers I can finally air the paler than white limbs of mine, after...after...after all that April is the month when a new grand national winner is crowned king of the toughest steeplechase in the world. I can safely say without hesitation that this years national is probably the most competitive yet, the handicapper has given everything a chance this year and I'm happy with the three selections that I'll be following. Grand National Selections: Selection 1: Onenightinvienna  Trained by Philip Hobbs ...

A real Christmas Cracker! Kempton Park Boxing Day.

The festive season has begun for me, sitting down with my Santa hat, a mince pie and a pint of guinness all points to a very content and relaxed feel to this weeks blogg. Merry Christmas everyone and boy we got some racing to look forward too. It's important to remember that with over three months or so before Cheltenham the trainers, owners, jocks and all us normal folk are looking forward to seeing a magnificient build up and thats why Boxing day at Kempton park is the place to be. On with the card... 12.50 Kempton 2m Hurdle It was nice to tip TETLAMI last time out at Sandown and I certainly wont be deserting this five year old just yet. Looked a picture in the paddock at Sandown, ran on strongly in the finish and will love softer ground than some of these if indeed it is on the softer side. Nicky Henderson showed his class in training this one to victory after a long lay off. I believe another win is possible and with Barry Geraghty on board I'm full of optimism. 1.2...

Royal Ascot Preview 2013

The centrepiece of our flat season is almost upon us, this time of year when our thoroughbreds have illustrated enough talent on the racecourse they now gain a chance at landing a big prize at Her Majesty's Royal Ascot. My first preview blog of the meeting quite logical focuses on the first day and it's my pleasure to outline my thoughts on the week ahead starting tonight. The main news this week regarding Henry Cecil is extremely sad, as many have mentioned with wonderful prose regarding the publics favourite, a horse handler who cared for his animals with the midas touch and a trainer who had the ambition and determination to never say 'enoughs enough' even when he was down to around 40 horses in the early 2000's or the pressure and stress in his private life. He is and will always be remembered as a true gentleman and a phenomenal trainer. It's also worth noting that he had an absolute terryifyingly good record at Royal Ascot and it just wont be the same w...
