Cheltenham Festival Day 2 Wednesday March 13th 2012

Well, watching the highlights back from today has been nothing short of incredible! This is the most captivating festival I can remember. Happy with my tips today, just a shame the Hurricane couldn't quite land a blow but what a terrific race!

On with the card...

2.05 Diamond Jubilee Hunt Chase 4m

This race is nothing short of a minefield to set our wallets up for day two of the festival. The question mark hanging over all of these no matter the quality of racing is weather or not they can get the 4m trip on good, quick ground. I have managed to select two, both having a good profile to win this marathon trip. Firstly, ALFIE SPINNER trained by Nick Williams this bay gelding has a good, solid chance. In his last race finished a close up third behind Invictus and Bobs Worth both who are top level animals in their own right. That form is a very good benchmark in my eyes and is very hard to match. ALFIE SPINNER could also be a plum ride for the very talented amateur Sam Waley Cohen. I also like a big outsider who likes the longer trip and will surely stay the 4m and that's the Charlie Longsden trained STRONGBOWS LEGEND if this horse jumps and is enthusiastic tomorrow then I have no doubt it will finish in the top three. The pick of his form would be in his race at Warwick the time before last when it finished behind the classy Hey Big Spender, you also are drawn to his form at Hereford in December winning by 25l in a lower grade but nonetheless a still breathtaking performance. I will be singing from the rooftop if this stayer who enjoys quicker ground can do the business here, in my opinion he has every chance.

2.05 Neptune Novices Hurdle 2m 5f

The Irish have dominated this race in recent years and seems that they hold strength in depth here and with Irish trainers winning five of the last nine renewals of this race it's no wonder that they have a strong chance. However, as is always the case when a horse like this comes around but COTTON MILL is a very interesting runner at an each way price. I'm a huge fan of horses that keep progressing particularly when they are upped in class and seem to relish it, although only five and looking novicey at some of the hurdles last time out I'm still happy to give this horse a chance. John Ferguson has made huge strides in his training career and with a current 36% strike rate this trainer is in fine form and a dream Cheltenham winner could be on the cards. COTTON MILL is not to be underestimated, this horse was rated 93 on the flat and when you look at his previous run over this trip he set himself a very good time.

2.40 RSA Chase 3m 110y

As soon as I heard the news that GRAND CRUS was entering this and not the Gold Cup my mind was made up. This horse is one of the most efficient, speedy, dynamic jumpers out there. His pin point accuracy over the jumps and his ability to stay on strongly in the finish is why I'm super keen on this greys chances. Looking back at the evidence in the Feltham all the things I mentioned above we're illustrated. GRAND CRUS had the better of Bobs Worth in that race and I'm certain he won't be beaten. I also have a lot of time for the jockey Tom Scudamore and I'll be calling hi home all the way up the run in!. GRAND CRUS class that
matters!

3.20 The Queen Mother Champion Chase 2m

FINIANS RAINBOW is an enigmatic sort that I can never walk away from. This could be his moment tomorrow. I'm praying that his jumping holds up as he is not only good enough to win this but has the capability to destroy this field. Nicky Henderson couldn't land a blow on the first day of the festival but this could be the one tomorrow. FINIANS RAINBOW lost out in the final strides last time and one in the most dramatic style the time before. I still believe he is progressing and no doubt if he puts his best foot forward! Settles quickly and jumps economically then I really can't see him being beaten. I say keep believing!

Leaving the rest, remember we still have 3 to go!

Good Luck if your having a punt!

Grand National Selections.

How I'm feeling about the upcoming Grand National Neptune Collognes - 2012 Grand National hero This time of year never fails to stir the soul both tangibly and metaphorically. After the sun peeps it's head out from amongst the clouds, after the temperature rises, after the first buds are seen on the trees, after the restoration of vitamin d in our blood, after the taste of a crisp cider on a warm day hits the tongue, after many months of wearing trousers I can finally air the paler than white limbs of mine, after...after...after all that April is the month when a new grand national winner is crowned king of the toughest steeplechase in the world. I can safely say without hesitation that this years national is probably the most competitive yet, the handicapper has given everything a chance this year and I'm happy with the three selections that I'll be following. A real Christmas Cracker! Kempton Park Boxing Day.

The festive season has begun for me, sitting down with my Santa hat, a mince pie and a pint of guinness all points to a very content and relaxed feel to this weeks blogg. Merry Christmas everyone and boy we got some racing to look forward too. It's important to remember that with over three months or so before Cheltenham the trainers, owners, jocks and all us normal folk are looking forward to seeing a magnificient build up and thats why Boxing day at Kempton park is the place to be. On with the card... 12.50 Kempton 2m Hurdle It was nice to tip TETLAMI last time out at Sandown and I certainly wont be deserting this five year old just yet. Looked a picture in the paddock at Sandown, ran on strongly in the finish and will love softer ground than some of these if indeed it is on the softer side. Nicky Henderson showed his class in training this one to victory after a long lay off. I believe another win is possible and with Barry Geraghty on board I'm full of optimism. 1.2...

Royal Ascot Preview 2013

The centrepiece of our flat season is almost upon us, this time of year when our thoroughbreds have illustrated enough talent on the racecourse they now gain a chance at landing a big prize at Her Majesty's Royal Ascot. My first preview blog of the meeting quite logical focuses on the first day and it's my pleasure to outline my thoughts on the week ahead starting tonight. The main news this week regarding Henry Cecil is extremely sad, as many have mentioned with wonderful prose regarding the publics favourite, a horse handler who cared for his animals with the midas touch and a trainer who had the ambition and determination to never say 'enoughs enough' even when he was down to around 40 horses in the early 2000's or the pressure and stress in his private life. He is and will always be remembered as a true gentleman and a phenomenal trainer. It's also worth noting that he had an absolute terryifyingly good record at Royal Ascot and it just wont be the same w...
