Saturday 14th January Kempton Park and Warwick.

Just eight weeks until the excitement and utopia of the Cheltenham festival, ever since I began my journey into the sport of kings I can safely say that the 2012 festival will undoubtedly be one of the best ever. I'm also going to throw an ante post bet in the ring and thats in the big one the gold cup. Quito de la roque could be the each way steal here, has been so progressive in the last year or so and will enjoy the trip over the gold cup extended 3miles. I believe he still has scope for improvement and at 33/1 is a big price at present.

On with the cards...

Kempton 1.05 2m Chase

I have to mention this race as we have three quality future chasers and all three will be going to Cheltenham in March. However, what a shame we only have the three. KUMBESHWAR is the one to be on here. Alan Kings yard is having a bit of a revolution and looks like his stable could finally be back with a vengeance. His strike rate this season has improved massively and in the last two weeks we've seen the likes of Hold On Julio raise the flag for this excellent trainer who should never be underestimated. KUMBESHWAR ticks the boxes for his jumping and I have always liked the way this horse travels in a race and seems to be the more consistent over the fences. I'm not immune to the fact that the classy Menorah is in this race but I'm not sure the bigger obstacles suit him and I also wasn't impressed by his run at Cheltenham last month.

1.40 Novices Hurdle 2m 5f

You can look at this race for as long as you like but it's almost impossible to have faith in most of these. Consequently I'm sticking with Alan King again here and thats because the ground may suit NO SUBSTITUTE, I believe it wont be too difficult to get through. I also like the fact NO SUBSTITUTE has also ran over this trip in similar conditions and ran a very solid race last time out. This horse will get the trip, likes the ground and was travelling really nicely last time out at Warwick running into the back of a few of them and not having to jump the last in that race worked against this bay gelding. Each way price and a solid bet at that.

2.50 Lanzarote Hurdle 2m 5f

An excellent race in prospect here as twenty horses go to post, quite of few of these seem to either have form which shows a lack of progress and some may have reached their handicap mark which wont go up any further. Conversely, we have some younger progressive types who may still have scope to improve. I heading in the direction of the David Pipe trained DECOY. This horse nothing but impressed me when leading for most of the way at Cheltenham and staying on up the hill to win a real gutsy display. DECOY looks suitably weighted, will like the ground and trip. I'm also going with SWIMCOMBE FLAME this bay mare is running off a featherweight and has bundles of class with her bloodlines all suggesting that this longer trip will suit her down to the ground. SWIMCOMBE FLAME  won her bumpers in classy style and in her last run she was always in command. Both these horses have great chances.

Warwick

2.30 Handicap Hurdle 3m 1f

SAFFRO  DE COT is a very consistent type and unfortunately has ran against some quality thoroughbreds that have gone on to bigger things the likes of Bobs Worth and Court in Motion to name but a few. SAFFRO DE COT is lightly weighted, will get this trip on tacky ground and the trainer Henry Daly is excellent form at present with five winners in the last fourteen days. His win at Haydock last time out just shows what a good stayer he is, this grey will take all the beating and for me is over priced at around 10/1.

3.40 Betfred Classic Chase 3m 5f

I'm tipping two in what is the highlight of todays racing. HEY BIG SPENDER has been unlucky this season not to get on the scoresheet. I saw him run at Cheltenham in November and put him firmly in the notebook after jumping and staying on extremely well even off top weight. I would also certainly say that this is the class horse in the race and will be staying on in this stamina sapping trip. HEY BIG SPENDER is my stand out each way bet today.

I'm also siding with STRONGBOWS LEGEND this is the young pretender and could be a potentially a superstar in the making. Charlie Longsden as I say each time I back one of his horses is going to be champion trainer one day, that I am sure of and if I had a horse in training he would be the man to do it. Quality trainer who I'm sure will have STRONGBOWS LEGEND ready and firing on all cylinders. This horse went firmly in the notebook when I saw it win easily at Hereford and if his jumping stacks up then another big run is expected.

Grand National Selections.

How I'm feeling about the upcoming Grand National Neptune Collognes - 2012 Grand National hero This time of year never fails to stir the soul both tangibly and metaphorically. After the sun peeps it's head out from amongst the clouds, after the temperature rises, after the first buds are seen on the trees, after the restoration of vitamin d in our blood, after the taste of a crisp cider on a warm day hits the tongue, after many months of wearing trousers I can finally air the paler than white limbs of mine, after...after...after all that April is the month when a new grand national winner is crowned king of the toughest steeplechase in the world. I can safely say without hesitation that this years national is probably the most competitive yet, the handicapper has given everything a chance this year and I'm happy with the three selections that I'll be following. A real Christmas Cracker! Kempton Park Boxing Day.

The festive season has begun for me, sitting down with my Santa hat, a mince pie and a pint of guinness all points to a very content and relaxed feel to this weeks blogg. Merry Christmas everyone and boy we got some racing to look forward too. It's important to remember that with over three months or so before Cheltenham the trainers, owners, jocks and all us normal folk are looking forward to seeing a magnificient build up and thats why Boxing day at Kempton park is the place to be. On with the card... 12.50 Kempton 2m Hurdle It was nice to tip TETLAMI last time out at Sandown and I certainly wont be deserting this five year old just yet. Looked a picture in the paddock at Sandown, ran on strongly in the finish and will love softer ground than some of these if indeed it is on the softer side. Nicky Henderson showed his class in training this one to victory after a long lay off. I believe another win is possible and with Barry Geraghty on board I'm full of optimism. 1.2...

Royal Ascot Preview 2013

The centrepiece of our flat season is almost upon us, this time of year when our thoroughbreds have illustrated enough talent on the racecourse they now gain a chance at landing a big prize at Her Majesty's Royal Ascot. My first preview blog of the meeting quite logical focuses on the first day and it's my pleasure to outline my thoughts on the week ahead starting tonight. The main news this week regarding Henry Cecil is extremely sad, as many have mentioned with wonderful prose regarding the publics favourite, a horse handler who cared for his animals with the midas touch and a trainer who had the ambition and determination to never say 'enoughs enough' even when he was down to around 40 horses in the early 2000's or the pressure and stress in his private life. He is and will always be remembered as a true gentleman and a phenomenal trainer. It's also worth noting that he had an absolute terryifyingly good record at Royal Ascot and it just wont be the same w...
