Ascot 15/10/2011 Champions Day

My fellow followers (if indeed I have any) I'm back ready, set for this electrifying champions day, in which can only be described as one of the best ever! In recent weeks I have been away not least in the beautiful city of Paris and in doing so witnessed an complete outsider hose the field in the Arc and see one of my favourite juveniles storm home to beat the dominating Goldikova in superb, classy and thrilling style! Horse racing at it's best.

Paradoxically, horse racing seems to be in a little turmoil at present with the contentious debate firing once again about the whip issue. Richard Hughes last night in my view has had a rush of blood to the head but has at least brought it firmly into the public domain and I hope a thorough review will be in order. If you want my view on the whip I felt the rules at present were fine and the modifications the whip has gone through in recent years and the process by which jockeys can be suspended was fine.

Anyway, onto tomorrow's exciting card!!

Long Distance Cup 2m

This race seems to become more intriguing the further and closer you look. Without question the three that head the market have every chance and all will be close to landing this prize. Fame and Glory may want softer ground, Times Up may have reached it's optimum rating and now be less progressive on a downward trend and Opinion Poll could be the one to beat and indeed in my mind is the one to catch. However, not alot of value for either of those three and the horse who finished 3rd in the Cesarewitch last weekend is running and looks a nice proposition at a tasty each way price. COLOUR VISION this horse is only a three year old but has bags of stamina and never gives up all the way to the line a typically Mark Johnston style trained horse an out and out battler. The trip isnt a worry for me as this horse ran a blinder over 2 furlongs further and will love the ground if indeed it's quick or any on the slow side. As long as this horse is fit and well from it's last couple of starts being relatively close together I see COLOUR VISION running a very solid race.

2.25 Sprint Stakes 6f

As I've stated for most of this flat season these big field handicaps are now a favourite of mine and I like to have a play. DEACON BLUES obvious choice to go with but if you experimented with novices to the racing game and showed them his horse last two runs I'm sure on that evidence alone people would be willing to back this. Cruised to victory in it's last run, cantered all over it's rivals. DEACON BLUES is progressing at a very quick rate, the track and ground suit, the jockey onboard is riding at the best I've ever seen him in the last few years and the horse has beaten quite of few of these in the past. Furthermore when you look at this horses time figures it seems that it's a top class sprinter who hasnt quite got to the top yet but I'm sure will win this on the bridle. Gotta say it a strong fancy!. However, if all goes wrong here's an interesting horse who gets the vote after winning it's last two previous starts, looks to be a bit of a stable star for a small scale trainer Chris Wall. Nonetheless a super trainer he has proved to be in recent years and with ROYAL ROCK A 6F specialist this horse seems to be in delightful form a cracking shout at a massive price!

3.00 Fillies and Mares 1m 4f

Crystal Capella lines up again this year but has struggled to recapture her form in recent runs and will undoubtedly find this a little harder than last year. GERTRUDE BELL is a filly who has found her last two runs over this trip to be very rewarding indeed beating Nova Vita convincingly in the process, find it hard to comprehend why the latter is one of the favourites here. I also love John Gosden a class, intelligent, articulate trainer who seems to partner well with the new kid on the block William Buick this horse in my view will take all the beating. Ground tick, trip tick, jockey and trainer tick this horse also looks to be progressing more as a 4 year old. GERTRUDE BELL is the one to be on!

3.35 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes

FRANKEL! Thats all you need to know....nothing else has a cat hairs chance of winning. Forecast with Excellerbration! Cheers Bonesy!

4.10 Champion Stakes

What a renewal so many in with chances but my money is split, I'm never a great lover of backing horses after it's had a tough race and quite a few of these have had arduous seasons but I'm particularly talking about the Arc! Most horse struggle to pull off this race after they have run in Paris. That's why I'm siding with the Henry Cecil pair TWICE OVER and MIDDAY. I must admit here that these two beautiful thoroughbreds will always be in my top 10 all time favourite horses but on form at Ascot and over this trip you'd be mad not to snap up the value found in both of these. One other key factor is that Sir Henry will have these two at the top of there game with both fresh as a daisy! Come On!.

GOOD LUCK!

Grand National Selections.

How I'm feeling about the upcoming Grand National Neptune Collognes - 2012 Grand National hero This time of year never fails to stir the soul both tangibly and metaphorically. After the sun peeps it's head out from amongst the clouds, after the temperature rises, after the first buds are seen on the trees, after the restoration of vitamin d in our blood, after the taste of a crisp cider on a warm day hits the tongue, after many months of wearing trousers I can finally air the paler than white limbs of mine, after...after...after all that April is the month when a new grand national winner is crowned king of the toughest steeplechase in the world. I can safely say without hesitation that this years national is probably the most competitive yet, the handicapper has given everything a chance this year and I'm happy with the three selections that I'll be following. Grand National Selections: Selection 1: Onenightinvienna  Trained by Philip Hobbs ...

A real Christmas Cracker! Kempton Park Boxing Day.

The festive season has begun for me, sitting down with my Santa hat, a mince pie and a pint of guinness all points to a very content and relaxed feel to this weeks blogg. Merry Christmas everyone and boy we got some racing to look forward too. It's important to remember that with over three months or so before Cheltenham the trainers, owners, jocks and all us normal folk are looking forward to seeing a magnificient build up and thats why Boxing day at Kempton park is the place to be. On with the card... 12.50 Kempton 2m Hurdle It was nice to tip TETLAMI last time out at Sandown and I certainly wont be deserting this five year old just yet. Looked a picture in the paddock at Sandown, ran on strongly in the finish and will love softer ground than some of these if indeed it is on the softer side. Nicky Henderson showed his class in training this one to victory after a long lay off. I believe another win is possible and with Barry Geraghty on board I'm full of optimism. 1.2...

Royal Ascot Preview 2013

The centrepiece of our flat season is almost upon us, this time of year when our thoroughbreds have illustrated enough talent on the racecourse they now gain a chance at landing a big prize at Her Majesty's Royal Ascot. My first preview blog of the meeting quite logical focuses on the first day and it's my pleasure to outline my thoughts on the week ahead starting tonight. The main news this week regarding Henry Cecil is extremely sad, as many have mentioned with wonderful prose regarding the publics favourite, a horse handler who cared for his animals with the midas touch and a trainer who had the ambition and determination to never say 'enoughs enough' even when he was down to around 40 horses in the early 2000's or the pressure and stress in his private life. He is and will always be remembered as a true gentleman and a phenomenal trainer. It's also worth noting that he had an absolute terryifyingly good record at Royal Ascot and it just wont be the same w...
