St Leger Day Saturday 10th September!

Well, what a great few days at Doncaster, Requinto ran a blinder today and what a master class training performance by John Oxx in the distance race, both tipped on this blogg.

Now on to the showpiece, the St Leger is the oldest classic and a real treat to look forward to, many will find the speed and distance of this race too much as it will truly be a stamina zapping calvary charge. Being brave, strong in the finish and having the necessary cruising speed throughout is very important. Now onto the card...

Doncaster

2.05 7f Stakes Race

The opening contest is a small select field and one in which you could give chances to Daddy Longlegs, Red Duke and ENTIFAADHA and that's my selection by a whisker. I believe this Dansili colt looks like its progress is in no danger of stopping over the 7f trip, also any rain that may fall over the track wont hinder this horses chances and its last run at York looked convincing in the closing stages. The trainer William Haggas has had a very good season and I'm sure if the journeyman Hills can deliver this horse at the right time then I seeing it winning in convincing fashion. The form through Al Khan is strong beating him by quite a few lengths and I believe if this is a battle in the finish this horse looks like it will stay past the 7 furlong trip.

2.35 Ladbrokes Portland Handicap

These big sprint handicap's in the past were certainly not my strong point or interest, how times can change. These day's I enjoy nothing more than a huge cavalry charge, looking through form lines, studying the draw and seeing if a progressive outsider can take these big prizes. The obvious trend in the last four years in the dominance of five year olds and five year olds in particular, since 2007 its been a five year old winner and what a cracking race this was last year when Poets Place took this prize. This year its very intriguing, I go back to a point I've made before do we go for an exposed horse or unexposed, the latter is hard to find but you can certainly say that the brave filly SWISS DREAM has a bit of class about her and being only a three year old is still progressive and will be a nice each way price. SWISS DREAM showed her class in a listed race at Newmarket last time out and showed what a classy filly she is. This will obviously be tough against the boys but I believe she is weighted, has a reasonably good draw and with Olivier Peslier on board suggest the brilliant trainer David Simcock is not messing around.

3.10 Ladbrokes St Leger 1m 6f

Truly special classic and one in which nine competitive thoroughbreds go to post. Who will get the trip at a stonking gallop and who has hat turn of foot in the finish. You maybe surprised to know that although Sea Moon looks the classy colt, a progressive type and won very well at York I'm not sure it will produce such a performance on livelier ground. I also think the price is too short in the betting so i'm looking elsewhere BLUE BUNTING and BROWN PANTHER are my picks and I cant split them but thats for different reasons. I have no concerns about the trip for either of these horses, both have won top flight races and both have impressed me all season. BLUE BUNTING has had a phenomenal season winning the 1000 Guineas, the Irish Oaks and the Yorkshire Oaks and all in a similar vain staying on strongly in the last furlong, showing an unbelievable turn of foot to nail his victims on the line or close to the line. BLUE BUNTING has a great shout of adding this coveted prize to its CV. BROWN PANTHER has beaten Census and lost to Census this season so you could say both have a chance however Tom Dascombe has shown he is a gifted trainer and the booking of Kieran Fallon will make this horse difficult to pass particularly the Fallon drive a truly brilliant horseman and at an each way price is worth having a bit each way, any cut in the ground will help as he was nothing but a stayer in the making at Ascot when he beat Census by six lengths, has every chance.

3.45 1m Handicap

SOORAH trained by William Haggas has a great chance of winning this handicap. This 8 furlong specialist looks like it may have of found a perfect opportunity to get a win on the board again. The Dubawi filly has been in the mix on her last three starts and winning one of them. The straight track should suit more than a undulating one like Goodwood as SOORAH won at Ascot which is quite similar to Doncaster. Again I'm sure Fallon will get the best out of this horse! Strong fancy!

Good Luck if your having a punt!

Grand National Selections.

How I'm feeling about the upcoming Grand National Neptune Collognes - 2012 Grand National hero This time of year never fails to stir the soul both tangibly and metaphorically. After the sun peeps it's head out from amongst the clouds, after the temperature rises, after the first buds are seen on the trees, after the restoration of vitamin d in our blood, after the taste of a crisp cider on a warm day hits the tongue, after many months of wearing trousers I can finally air the paler than white limbs of mine, after...after...after all that April is the month when a new grand national winner is crowned king of the toughest steeplechase in the world. I can safely say without hesitation that this years national is probably the most competitive yet, the handicapper has given everything a chance this year and I'm happy with the three selections that I'll be following. A real Christmas Cracker! Kempton Park Boxing Day.

The festive season has begun for me, sitting down with my Santa hat, a mince pie and a pint of guinness all points to a very content and relaxed feel to this weeks blogg. Merry Christmas everyone and boy we got some racing to look forward too. It's important to remember that with over three months or so before Cheltenham the trainers, owners, jocks and all us normal folk are looking forward to seeing a magnificient build up and thats why Boxing day at Kempton park is the place to be. On with the card... 12.50 Kempton 2m Hurdle It was nice to tip TETLAMI last time out at Sandown and I certainly wont be deserting this five year old just yet. Looked a picture in the paddock at Sandown, ran on strongly in the finish and will love softer ground than some of these if indeed it is on the softer side. Nicky Henderson showed his class in training this one to victory after a long lay off. I believe another win is possible and with Barry Geraghty on board I'm full of optimism. 1.2...

Royal Ascot Preview 2013

The centrepiece of our flat season is almost upon us, this time of year when our thoroughbreds have illustrated enough talent on the racecourse they now gain a chance at landing a big prize at Her Majesty's Royal Ascot. My first preview blog of the meeting quite logical focuses on the first day and it's my pleasure to outline my thoughts on the week ahead starting tonight. The main news this week regarding Henry Cecil is extremely sad, as many have mentioned with wonderful prose regarding the publics favourite, a horse handler who cared for his animals with the midas touch and a trainer who had the ambition and determination to never say 'enoughs enough' even when he was down to around 40 horses in the early 2000's or the pressure and stress in his private life. He is and will always be remembered as a true gentleman and a phenomenal trainer. It's also worth noting that he had an absolute terryifyingly good record at Royal Ascot and it just wont be the same w...
