Saturday 17th September, Ayr, Newbury and HQ.

Last week saw Masked Marvel take the St Ledger in stunning style. The season is moving closer to the final meetings of the year on the flat and we still have the Prix de la Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp in which I shall be in attendance plus friends, cant wait. Hot on the heels of that prestigious event we have champions day at Ascot. It just couldn't get any better!

Now on to the weekend's racing and its a nationwide festival of racing where I'll be pick n mixing it from Ayr, Newbury and Newmarket.

Newbury 2.00 Arc Trial 1m 3f

A cracking race in which eight go to post, the horse Dangerous Midge is a bit of a globe trotter, winning the Breeders Cup Turf last year in which Dettori rode a wonderful race, I believe however that this is more of a prep race for another campaign in the States having not run since March and running a bad race in Dubai. But it's SRI PUTRA that gets the vote here, this Oasis Dream thoroughbred has everything going for it, the extra furlong wont be a problem but the ground could do with being on the quicker side of good. However SRI PUTRA has been in better company than these and has not disgraced itself in doing so. Its third, five lengths behind So You Think at Sandown is very solid form indeed and the trainer is having a relatively good time of things at present. This race is SRI PUTRA'S for the taking at 4/1 snap it up.

Ayr 2.15 Silver Cup 6f Sprint

Boy! this will be some calvary charge tomorrow. A huge field of 27 go to post and the draw is a very interesting proposition, usually horses drawn low have an advantage but this could be different tomorrow as these aren't the greatest sprinters in the world and you could say that more pace is found in the middle to higher numbers. Dandy Nicholl's and Richard Fahey have very good records in this race and it seems they could hold the answer by the amount of entries they hold but I'm tipping two horses who hail from the same yard David Barron's and that's BERTIWISSLE and ELUSIVE PRINCE both have chances is this open contest. If I start with BERTIWISSLE its last run at Newmarket was exceptional, bursting through and staying on to take the race. This three year old still seems to be progressive and wont mind a bit of cut in the ground. Its drawn in a potentially plum draw stall four and if the pace is down that side then I can quite easily see this chestnut gelding in with a shout and with the jockey booking of Fran Berry one of the most talented jockey's out there I can see that they mean business, has a great shout! ELUSIVE PRINCE was only a length behind its stable mate last time at Newmarket and again looks a progressive type. One other variable to add in here is that both these horse are carrying a low weight, ELUSIVE PRINCE also wont mind cut in the ground and is drawn on the opposite side and thats also behind my reasoning. Barron took this race last year and looks like he'll come close again.

Ayr 3.20 Gold Cup 6f

You maybe right to hold fire on this race until you have seen if the ground and draw appears to be better on the low or high numbers but I'm looking solely at form. Again Nicholls, Fahey have plenty of runners to try and win this prestigious prize both are fantastic trainers in the realm of speed. However, yet again I'm looking elsewhere as I think an oversight be it a gamble but SON OF THE CAT looks an absolute cracking bet at around 25/1. This horse is consistent, has the level of form to run in this class and will enjoy the softer ground if indeed it turns into a bit of a mud bath. The price may reflect the relatively unknown trainer credentials but the booking of Sylvester De Sousa who currently is in the shake up for the jockeys championship looks like Mr Gubby is serious about this horses chances. When we look at the form I was particularly impressed with it's Stewart Sprint Handicap win at Goodwood beating the like's of Confessional is a solid performance. I truly believe this is a great each way bet!

3.30 Newmarket Cesarewitch Handicap Trial 2m 2f

DAYIA has proved before that she has bags of stamina and can take this prize. DAYIA has ran over a variety of trips and on all types of ground. This mare is a consistent type who will always give it her all everytime she runs. She ran a blinder in the Queen Alexandra at Ascot leading with two furlongs to go but just didn't have the stamina to last out the 2m 5f race. With that race in mind DAYIA has a little more class than the rest of these, my only concern is the weight she'll be carrying but I'm sure she'll cope. Jack Mitchell is in terrific form and can see him giving this mare a dream ride. Another awesome each way bet!

Newbury 3.40 Dubai International World Trophy 5f

Class, class and more class in this terrific renewal. Last years winner Astrological Jet tries to defend her crown but I'm afraid it maybe taken from her. I'm a stickler for believing that a 5f specialist is more important than a horse that runs at 6f or 7f, I've just seen the real speedster's stick to 5f and usually dominant over that distance. Consequently we have a few 5f specialist to choose from but NIGHT CARNATION gets the vote here. I have too admit I've got to tip DINKUM DIAMOND as well because I just cant split these too. Both have had terrific season's and as they are only three year olds both a still progressing fast and have a good few seasons to look forward too. Night Carnation won impressively at what could be described as her favourite track Sandown and Dinkum Diamond was just pipped near the line last time out. I believe both have an equal chance! I really cant split them.

Good Luck!

Grand National Selections.

How I'm feeling about the upcoming Grand National Neptune Collognes - 2012 Grand National hero This time of year never fails to stir the soul both tangibly and metaphorically. After the sun peeps it's head out from amongst the clouds, after the temperature rises, after the first buds are seen on the trees, after the restoration of vitamin d in our blood, after the taste of a crisp cider on a warm day hits the tongue, after many months of wearing trousers I can finally air the paler than white limbs of mine, after...after...after all that April is the month when a new grand national winner is crowned king of the toughest steeplechase in the world. I can safely say without hesitation that this years national is probably the most competitive yet, the handicapper has given everything a chance this year and I'm happy with the three selections that I'll be following. A real Christmas Cracker! Kempton Park Boxing Day.

The festive season has begun for me, sitting down with my Santa hat, a mince pie and a pint of guinness all points to a very content and relaxed feel to this weeks blogg. Merry Christmas everyone and boy we got some racing to look forward too. It's important to remember that with over three months or so before Cheltenham the trainers, owners, jocks and all us normal folk are looking forward to seeing a magnificient build up and thats why Boxing day at Kempton park is the place to be. On with the card... 12.50 Kempton 2m Hurdle It was nice to tip TETLAMI last time out at Sandown and I certainly wont be deserting this five year old just yet. Looked a picture in the paddock at Sandown, ran on strongly in the finish and will love softer ground than some of these if indeed it is on the softer side. Nicky Henderson showed his class in training this one to victory after a long lay off. I believe another win is possible and with Barry Geraghty on board I'm full of optimism. 1.2...

Royal Ascot Preview 2013

The centrepiece of our flat season is almost upon us, this time of year when our thoroughbreds have illustrated enough talent on the racecourse they now gain a chance at landing a big prize at Her Majesty's Royal Ascot. My first preview blog of the meeting quite logical focuses on the first day and it's my pleasure to outline my thoughts on the week ahead starting tonight. The main news this week regarding Henry Cecil is extremely sad, as many have mentioned with wonderful prose regarding the publics favourite, a horse handler who cared for his animals with the midas touch and a trainer who had the ambition and determination to never say 'enoughs enough' even when he was down to around 40 horses in the early 2000's or the pressure and stress in his private life. He is and will always be remembered as a true gentleman and a phenomenal trainer. It's also worth noting that he had an absolute terryifyingly good record at Royal Ascot and it just wont be the same w...
