Newmarket Saturday 24th September.

Next weekend all roads lead to Paris and it's very hard not to get just a little excited about seeing top flight thoroughbreds battling it out for some of the world most coveted prizes. The Arc this year is a very intriguing race and I'll be there living the proverbial dream.

We all know that life can be filled with unforgiving minutes of hard graft and toil and at times we dont have alot to show for it but if we measure life on how many times it takes our breathe away and not how many times we breath. I totally believe the Arc is a must see!

On to tomorrow's card:-

2.05 1m Class 1 Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes.

The opening contest's winner will be going in my notebook for next season as I'm sure we may have a top level horse here in waiting. The mighty Frankel took this prize a year ago and I'm not suggesting for one minute we have another one of those on our hands but it maybe an important thing to do for next season. Here my selection is certainly a progressive type who will again perfom well on this firmer surface, the trainer has had a particularly good last ten days and looks like John Dunlop could hold the answer to this tricky contest. FARHAAN has excellent form this season, judging by it's times over 7f and 1m this horse horse should certainly be in the mix. When you look at it's most recent performance at Salisbury the horse idled for a while at the 2 furlong marker but then soon asserted and looked in control even though only winning by a neck. My only concern is the step up in class but I'm not overly worried as this horse will do nothing but progress.

2.35 6f Chevely Park Stakes

Here we have some classy fillies, it's very easy to see why Best Terms is the favourite here, judging on form it's been in front of quite a few of these who are lining up for this race before and by the perfomances on a variety of ground it seems it could be pretty unbeatable and a cracking filly to own for next season so why am I not tipping it? Well, the answer is in the shape of LIGHTNING PEARL this Ger Lyons trained filly looks on paper to be very evenly matched with the favourite and I believe the booking of Johnny Murtagh again is a magic combination. The filly will enjoy the ground if it's lively and will also have the stamina to sustain a pretty fierce gallop and at alot nicer price is certainly the one to be on.

Sahpresa so impressive in this race a year ago.

3.10 Kingdom of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes 1m

Another fillies race and this is an excellent contest. The likely French trained favourite is SAHPRESA who won this race 12 month's ago and seems to be in fine fettle at present. SAHPRESA can go on any ground and seems to enjoy the undulating track at Newmarket. The horse has ran against some of these before and has come out on top this filly seems to have buckets of stamina and can hit the accelerator at the right time and in doing so can out sprint and out stay her rivals. Looks the one to catch!. However I'm also going to tip STRAWBERRYDAIQUIRI this beautful grey filly has some excellent form under her belt and indeed finished 2nd in this race 12 months ago. It's quite clear that since going to Brian Meehan's yard (a trainer I very much admire) the horse hasn't performed and may have had a few problems since returning from Dubai and this can happen as we have seen with other horses returning from trips abroad. However in her last two starts I believe that either the ground hasnt been to favour or the horse lacked a little fitness. My suggestion here is an each way squeak at a tasty 33/1 as if she does return to form she'll undoubtedly be in the mix no question.

Cry Fury in action

3.50 The Betfred Cambridgeshire 1m 1f

A massive 35 horses go to post here in a very intriguing renewal. Its such a diverse bunch that it's taken me the best part of 45 minutes to decide on my two selection's and here, in it's most concise manner is my reasoning. I'm going with one progressive youngster and one old timer both with live chances both trained by Roger Charlton who seems to do quite well at tracks like Newmarket and Goodwood. CRY FURY and PROPONENT are my selections. CRY FURY has bundles of potential and will certainly run a better race than it did on it's previous start. I've heard the trainer talk very positively about this horse and I believe will run a credible race. Its last run at Doncaster was a bit messy when not getting a clear run two furlongs out, conversely the time before at Goodwood really showed the true CRY FURY as the colt quickened clear on quick ground and on a undulating track like Newmarket. Progress is clearly still to be made and this owner doesnt tend to buy anything less than a top quality thoroughbred. In my opinion is the one to beat! I just hope the booking of Hughes doesnt cock it up!. PROPONENT always seems to save his best performances for Newmarket, the horse is certainly suited by quicker ground and has finished  4 lengths off Green Destiny at this track a few starts ago. If PROPONENT can replicate that kind of run again this 7 year old will be in the mix no question and at around 16/1 that's very good value.

Arc De Triomphe Ante-Post

Quite a few fillies in the mix this Saturday so while were on the subject

If the ground stays firm in Bois de Bologne next weekend then this 1m 4f specialist filly has a great chance.
What a beautiful filly but who is it?

Grand National Selections.

How I'm feeling about the upcoming Grand National Neptune Collognes - 2012 Grand National hero This time of year never fails to stir the soul both tangibly and metaphorically. After the sun peeps it's head out from amongst the clouds, after the temperature rises, after the first buds are seen on the trees, after the restoration of vitamin d in our blood, after the taste of a crisp cider on a warm day hits the tongue, after many months of wearing trousers I can finally air the paler than white limbs of mine, after...after...after all that April is the month when a new grand national winner is crowned king of the toughest steeplechase in the world. I can safely say without hesitation that this years national is probably the most competitive yet, the handicapper has given everything a chance this year and I'm happy with the three selections that I'll be following. A real Christmas Cracker! Kempton Park Boxing Day.

The festive season has begun for me, sitting down with my Santa hat, a mince pie and a pint of guinness all points to a very content and relaxed feel to this weeks blogg. Merry Christmas everyone and boy we got some racing to look forward too. It's important to remember that with over three months or so before Cheltenham the trainers, owners, jocks and all us normal folk are looking forward to seeing a magnificient build up and thats why Boxing day at Kempton park is the place to be. On with the card... 12.50 Kempton 2m Hurdle It was nice to tip TETLAMI last time out at Sandown and I certainly wont be deserting this five year old just yet. Looked a picture in the paddock at Sandown, ran on strongly in the finish and will love softer ground than some of these if indeed it is on the softer side. Nicky Henderson showed his class in training this one to victory after a long lay off. I believe another win is possible and with Barry Geraghty on board I'm full of optimism. 1.2...

Royal Ascot Preview 2013

The centrepiece of our flat season is almost upon us, this time of year when our thoroughbreds have illustrated enough talent on the racecourse they now gain a chance at landing a big prize at Her Majesty's Royal Ascot. My first preview blog of the meeting quite logical focuses on the first day and it's my pleasure to outline my thoughts on the week ahead starting tonight. The main news this week regarding Henry Cecil is extremely sad, as many have mentioned with wonderful prose regarding the publics favourite, a horse handler who cared for his animals with the midas touch and a trainer who had the ambition and determination to never say 'enoughs enough' even when he was down to around 40 horses in the early 2000's or the pressure and stress in his private life. He is and will always be remembered as a true gentleman and a phenomenal trainer. It's also worth noting that he had an absolute terryifyingly good record at Royal Ascot and it just wont be the same w...
