Haydock Park/Leopardstown Saturday 3rd September.

Always trying to find more original ways of starting this blogg but I'll settle for a great weekend of racing so read on to find out where my money will be going! As usual will be selecting the runners and riders across the Haydock card but am being a little selective over in Ireland at Leopardstown.

Haydock 2.00pm 1m

The start to this card is very intriguing, these horses seem to be not quite good enough for the top tier of racing and have been close in Class 1 contests but not many have been consistent enough to perform at the top level over a mile. Consequently that makes this race very interesting as they are all in this melting pot together in a race which will undoubtedly have a close finish. I'll be tipping FIRST CITY to go and do the business in a tricky contest. FIRST CITY has shown a level of form which warrants respect, this mare has been amongst better company finishing 4th in Deauville last time out against classy fillies like Timpeice and Goldikova and was by no means disgraced in that race. The mare also ran well at Newmarket the time before finishing a good 3rd in the Falmouth stakes again against stronger opposition. The ground is no concern, the track will suit and with Jamie Spencer on board I'm sure this horse will be in amongst the first home.

2.30pm 1m 6f Handicap

Seventeen runners go to post here in a very competitive heat, in the last two years its the four year olds that have held the key to solving this but I'm looking as always for a bit of value. IIL DE RE could certainly be value tomorrow and has alot to like. Firstly, this grey gelding will get the trip, has been relatively lightly raced this season and has shown a good level of form over the long distances to warrant respect and with the booking of Paul Hanagan looks to have a very real chance.

Skipping the 3.00pm

3.35pm Betfred Sprint Cup 6f
Bated Breath
Dream Ahead

Unfortunately I'm going to be greedy and tip two runners here both outsiders but both in with a squeak. Firstly this is a cracking renewal of the betfred Sprint Cup and without a doubt one full of quality animals. If we look back over time some interesting trends have come up like for instance in the last four renewals of this race no three year old has taken the sprint cup and with a quite a few in this year I do believe that this statistic will change. It also seems that the northern trainers have done particularly well something that may also change. The two I'm looking at are BATED BREATH and still a star in the making for me DREAM AHEAD. Lets start with BATED BREATH this beautiful bay colt is nothing but consistent, Roger Charlton deserves to win a race with this horse and I'm certain will run up to it potential on this occasion. The horse only lost by half a length the time before last and on its last run you could say the 5f trip and the softer ground did not suit at York. The trainer has expressed his belief in this horse many times before and looks like he may have found the perfect race for such a progressive and talented animal and currently around 13/2 worth an each way punt. DREAM AHEAD needs no introduction particularly from me, I loved the way this horse exploded onto the scene as a 2yo and produced a wonderful turn of foot a few starts ago in the Darley July Cup at Newmarket, on that day that performance was nothing short of world class. Last time out in France I just believe the race wasnt run to suit. In this race tomorrow the ground and the trip are perfect and with Buick on board again over a shorter trip I believe this horse will take all the beating currently 4/1. Snap it up!

Now over to Ireland.

Leopardstown 5.40pm 1m

Aiden O'Brien can be similar to the savoury spread marmite when it comes to his horses. What I'm trying to say here is that you either believe in what he does or you dont. For example the use of pacemakers in races is by far one of his favourite things to do, secondly his politician like style answers in interviews or the fact the his son Joseph now saddles alot of his better horses when other jockeys have had to wait for their turn and havent always been given the opportunity. However one thing is for sure 'Dismiss him at your peril! and thats why its important to look at his training record particularly at this meeting. TOGETHER a beautifully bred filly as they always are but a horse with great potential and has shown that in previous races this year, I believe this race is her's. Over a mile on quick ground particularly her form at this track as a two year old shows a strong chance to win this prize. Colm O Donohugue is a cracking jockey and underated in my opinion this horse has finished three quarters of a length down on Blue Bunting and Misty for Me the latter is in this race but at 5/4 ish odds I'll be on TOGETHER to reverse that form. Are you with me?

Leopardstown 6.45 1m 2f Champion Stakes.

The anticipation to see the magnificient SO YOU THINK is always a pleasure to see. This five year old has been on a globetrotting mission this year and has proved at the highest level just what a phenomenal horse this is. SO YOU THINK is running over its 10 furlong trip that it has done so well over to date. This is a prep race for the Arc and if it wins here and well it has every chance of taking the Arc de Triomphe in Paris next month. Ticks all the right boxes is a quality horse nothing in the field is anywhere near as good. However Snow Fairy would be my only danger but the filly enjoys an extra 2 furlongs to see her at her best.

Grand National Selections.

How I'm feeling about the upcoming Grand National Neptune Collognes - 2012 Grand National hero This time of year never fails to stir the soul both tangibly and metaphorically. After the sun peeps it's head out from amongst the clouds, after the temperature rises, after the first buds are seen on the trees, after the restoration of vitamin d in our blood, after the taste of a crisp cider on a warm day hits the tongue, after many months of wearing trousers I can finally air the paler than white limbs of mine, after...after...after all that April is the month when a new grand national winner is crowned king of the toughest steeplechase in the world. I can safely say without hesitation that this years national is probably the most competitive yet, the handicapper has given everything a chance this year and I'm happy with the three selections that I'll be following. Grand National Selections: Selection 1: Onenightinvienna  Trained by Philip Hobbs ...

A real Christmas Cracker! Kempton Park Boxing Day.

The festive season has begun for me, sitting down with my Santa hat, a mince pie and a pint of guinness all points to a very content and relaxed feel to this weeks blogg. Merry Christmas everyone and boy we got some racing to look forward too. It's important to remember that with over three months or so before Cheltenham the trainers, owners, jocks and all us normal folk are looking forward to seeing a magnificient build up and thats why Boxing day at Kempton park is the place to be. On with the card... 12.50 Kempton 2m Hurdle It was nice to tip TETLAMI last time out at Sandown and I certainly wont be deserting this five year old just yet. Looked a picture in the paddock at Sandown, ran on strongly in the finish and will love softer ground than some of these if indeed it is on the softer side. Nicky Henderson showed his class in training this one to victory after a long lay off. I believe another win is possible and with Barry Geraghty on board I'm full of optimism. 1.2...

Royal Ascot Preview 2013

The centrepiece of our flat season is almost upon us, this time of year when our thoroughbreds have illustrated enough talent on the racecourse they now gain a chance at landing a big prize at Her Majesty's Royal Ascot. My first preview blog of the meeting quite logical focuses on the first day and it's my pleasure to outline my thoughts on the week ahead starting tonight. The main news this week regarding Henry Cecil is extremely sad, as many have mentioned with wonderful prose regarding the publics favourite, a horse handler who cared for his animals with the midas touch and a trainer who had the ambition and determination to never say 'enoughs enough' even when he was down to around 40 horses in the early 2000's or the pressure and stress in his private life. He is and will always be remembered as a true gentleman and a phenomenal trainer. It's also worth noting that he had an absolute terryifyingly good record at Royal Ascot and it just wont be the same w...
