York Ebor Meeting Day 2 18th August 2011

Have to say some of my selections were close yesterday, a great day of racing and what a great sight to see Midday and Twice Over battling out the finish. Two truly out and out quality animals.

2.00 Yearling Stakes 2yo 6f

This was the race last year when we saw the terrific Wooton Bassett, that horse last season went from strength to strength and been a little disappointing this year but that could be down to a few setbacks. Anyway this race has any element of interest today, I dont usually back races such as this like Nursery's etc but again I'm looking at a horse that looks the most progressive and sticks out like a sore thumb. RED ART trained by Barry Hills looks the one to be on. Was very unlucky in it last run at Chester ran an absloute blinder staying on in the finish to end up an unlucky second over 6f, has excellent form on soft ground which I sure maybe a little more testing after the rain we've had over night. At 14/1 a nice price the only slight negative could be the draw but if they go towards the middle has every chance. Strongly fancy this one RED ART.

2.30 Lowther Stakes 6f

Another two year old contest but you could say this has the better quality. I'm heading over the Irish Sea to find the winner of this race and thats the Davey Wachman trained FIRE LILLY this horse is undoubtedly progressive, will love the ground and has a future entry in the Cheveley Park stakes later next month. That for me is a true sign that the trainer thinks alot about this horse. Also if you look at it last run on yielding ground in Ireland you'll see that this horse was increasing its win distance inside the final furlong and stayed on strongly. Again a nice price around 6/1 for you each way punters.

3.05 Goddard Stakes Handicap 1m

It appears from the stats that favourites do not seem to do very well in this race, from 1994 only four favourites have won this race. Is that a clue in itself? Well from my point of view it is, this is usually won by a horse who is relatively lightly weighted and out of the handicappers grasp. These factors point towards an outsider who will appeciate the ground no end as he showed back in October of last year at this very track. The trainer David Simcock is one of my favourite trainers out there and has had a very good month so far and as PINTURA  in weighted nicely, was staying on all the time in the run to the line at Good wood last time out. This horse at around 15/2 has very strong chance of winning this race, if Jamie Spencer rides this horse with patience and delivers him at the right time, I'm sure he can take this. PINTURA.

3.40 1m 4f  Derbyshire Fillies Oaks

The fillies go to post here and a good renewal of this race. Midday taking this prize last year. A close contest this year and I think it necessary to mention her that BLUE BUNTING will take all the beating her. Winning at the Curragh in the Irish Oaks and taking the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket is no mean feet. This filly is totally honest and forward in everything she does. She's also proved in Ireland that she can handle the softer surface and has every chance her.

4.15 1m 4f Fillies listed.

WILD COCO (nap) will go off the lightly favourite but is it really any wonder, this filly has shown she is capable over this trip, is in my opinion better than all these and has the most progressive profile. Sir Henry Cecil may have to acknowledge that from its last run on the Sussex Downs the horse didnt really travel and didnt handle the track all that well, this can be put right today at the Knavesmire. WILD COCO (nap).

Alkl my selections are in with a chance today I feel quite sure of that!

Grand National Selections.

How I'm feeling about the upcoming Grand National Neptune Collognes - 2012 Grand National hero This time of year never fails to stir the soul both tangibly and metaphorically. After the sun peeps it's head out from amongst the clouds, after the temperature rises, after the first buds are seen on the trees, after the restoration of vitamin d in our blood, after the taste of a crisp cider on a warm day hits the tongue, after many months of wearing trousers I can finally air the paler than white limbs of mine, after...after...after all that April is the month when a new grand national winner is crowned king of the toughest steeplechase in the world. I can safely say without hesitation that this years national is probably the most competitive yet, the handicapper has given everything a chance this year and I'm happy with the three selections that I'll be following. A real Christmas Cracker! Kempton Park Boxing Day.

The festive season has begun for me, sitting down with my Santa hat, a mince pie and a pint of guinness all points to a very content and relaxed feel to this weeks blogg. Merry Christmas everyone and boy we got some racing to look forward too. It's important to remember that with over three months or so before Cheltenham the trainers, owners, jocks and all us normal folk are looking forward to seeing a magnificient build up and thats why Boxing day at Kempton park is the place to be. On with the card... 12.50 Kempton 2m Hurdle It was nice to tip TETLAMI last time out at Sandown and I certainly wont be deserting this five year old just yet. Looked a picture in the paddock at Sandown, ran on strongly in the finish and will love softer ground than some of these if indeed it is on the softer side. Nicky Henderson showed his class in training this one to victory after a long lay off. I believe another win is possible and with Barry Geraghty on board I'm full of optimism. 1.2...

Royal Ascot Preview 2013

The centrepiece of our flat season is almost upon us, this time of year when our thoroughbreds have illustrated enough talent on the racecourse they now gain a chance at landing a big prize at Her Majesty's Royal Ascot. My first preview blog of the meeting quite logical focuses on the first day and it's my pleasure to outline my thoughts on the week ahead starting tonight. The main news this week regarding Henry Cecil is extremely sad, as many have mentioned with wonderful prose regarding the publics favourite, a horse handler who cared for his animals with the midas touch and a trainer who had the ambition and determination to never say 'enoughs enough' even when he was down to around 40 horses in the early 2000's or the pressure and stress in his private life. He is and will always be remembered as a true gentleman and a phenomenal trainer. It's also worth noting that he had an absolute terryifyingly good record at Royal Ascot and it just wont be the same w...
