Glorious Goodwood Saturday 20th July

Boy am I enjoying writing this today on my summer holidays. Apologies for the last couple of days the blogg has not been up for one reason or another but its back with a bang today!

As always going to go through the card at Goodwood and may even throw a few other fancies from elsewhere today. As always betting on every race is not adviced but I'll be giving you may in depth analysis as always to help you make your decisions!

2.05 Stewards Handicap 6f

If you read my blogg most Saturdays you'll begin to understand my love of finding value in handicaps such as this. However one must remember that these races both in size and nature throw up some very key variables. If your new to the game of racing then let me explain. Draw biast- this means sometimes the pace/quicker ground can play a massive part, moreover if you are running with pacy sprinters who can give you a tow into the race then this can be a massive bonus, no pace over 6f can be detrimental to a horses chances. Consequently if the horse is drawn where the quicker ground is with pacy sprinters who like to get on with it then that is undoubtedly the place to be. So who's in the correct position? Well the clerk of the course this morning on the morning line talked about low numbers given more of a chance an the ground a little slower dow the middle. I'm not going on that solely but I'll include it in my thinking. So, make no mistake this is a very tough opening race and I'm afraid I need to tip three MAC GILLE EOIN, DUBAI MEDIA and JOSEPH HENRY. Starting with MAC GILLE EOIN this horse bounced staright back to form in its recent start at Epsom ralling late to win a shade cosily in the end but is very much an Epsom specialised, furthermore it has ran well in the past at Goodwood a low draw here and has ran in better quality races than this in the past will get the trip and with the master pilot Queally on board who will be riding more freely now after Frankels win I'm sure this horse will give a good account of himself. DUBAI MEDIA for me makes some appeal as well at a very attractive price I'm convinced the way the race panned out last time didnt suit and should of been up with the pace to have a chance so a line through its last form but ran a blinder behind Anne of Kiev and I feel a good each way price here. Finally JOSEPH HENRY its always a mistake to discount Dandy Nicholl runners and I find it interesting that the betting suggest this isnt Nicholls strongest runner, I think it is the jockey taking off three vital pounds may make all the difference and strong pace with the ground will suit this hose down to the ground, out of the three I've chosen this is my strongest selection.

2.35 Summer Handicap 1m 6f

A testing race, undulating track, sweeping bends and a stamina sapping 1m 6f so who's gonna like the ground and who has solid claims. INVENTISSEMENT trained by the legend John Gosden has every chance at an each way price, bar its last run the course and distance form at Goodwood in April is very solid form. Experience of this track is a huge positive and winning over this trip at Goodwood is a solid enough explanation for a very good run here. Of the others most like Verdant hasnt convinced me that this is a suitable and some of the other are more exposed than my selection.

3.10 Nassau Staeks 1m 2f

A cracking renewal for the filles here, quite a few unknowns in regards to how this race will be run, difficult to see where the pace will be which is important for this to be a true run race. However, MIDDAY for me is the one to beat and I believe she'll make this three in a row Nassau Stake wins. MIDDAY doesnt have amazing bomb proof form to go on but I was impressed by here run in the coronation cup at Epsom at the start of last month to illustrate just how good she can be. A proven stayer and if this is run at a strong gallop I can see her winning this cosily.

3.45 The Stewards Cup 6f

Another huge field go to post for one of the highlight sprints of the year. In this handicap the same rules apply as the first race of the day. I for one would love to see Hoof it win here a great sprinter who has captured everyones imagination partly owned by Lee Westwood and would love to see it hose up. However, I think its highly unlikely because of the huge burden its carrying off top weight and the draw ist as favourable as it could potentially be. Its taken quite a while to pick my selection and I've narrowed it down to three potential each way squeaks and that is BRAVE PROSPECTOR at 33/1 and TIDDLIWINKS at 16/1 and PASTORAL PRAYER at 16/1. I selected two with high draws and one a low draw. In terms of form it could be argued that TIDDLIWINKS has the strongest set of figures and looks a very nice price Kevin Ryans stable is in good form and this horse is the model of consistency not in winning but in placings and running bar its last run strong in the finish. BRAVE PROSPECTOR is a horse I have always liked running credibly in its last run I believe this horse will be staying on if its a blazing gallop. PASTORAL PLAYER is based on my heart and not my mind I still believe we have yet to see this horses true potential, I can see a big race coming and it could be this one.

Newmarket 4.05 1m 2f

TROJAN NIGHTS trained by William Haggas has every chance in this race. Three year olds have done particularly well in the past and I see a big run on better ground will suit TROJAN NIGHTS I was very impressed by here performance at Epsom the time before last and looks like she could go very well here at Newmarket.

Grand National Selections.

How I'm feeling about the upcoming Grand National Neptune Collognes - 2012 Grand National hero This time of year never fails to stir the soul both tangibly and metaphorically. After the sun peeps it's head out from amongst the clouds, after the temperature rises, after the first buds are seen on the trees, after the restoration of vitamin d in our blood, after the taste of a crisp cider on a warm day hits the tongue, after many months of wearing trousers I can finally air the paler than white limbs of mine, after...after...after all that April is the month when a new grand national winner is crowned king of the toughest steeplechase in the world. I can safely say without hesitation that this years national is probably the most competitive yet, the handicapper has given everything a chance this year and I'm happy with the three selections that I'll be following. A real Christmas Cracker! Kempton Park Boxing Day.

The festive season has begun for me, sitting down with my Santa hat, a mince pie and a pint of guinness all points to a very content and relaxed feel to this weeks blogg. Merry Christmas everyone and boy we got some racing to look forward too. It's important to remember that with over three months or so before Cheltenham the trainers, owners, jocks and all us normal folk are looking forward to seeing a magnificient build up and thats why Boxing day at Kempton park is the place to be. On with the card... 12.50 Kempton 2m Hurdle It was nice to tip TETLAMI last time out at Sandown and I certainly wont be deserting this five year old just yet. Looked a picture in the paddock at Sandown, ran on strongly in the finish and will love softer ground than some of these if indeed it is on the softer side. Nicky Henderson showed his class in training this one to victory after a long lay off. I believe another win is possible and with Barry Geraghty on board I'm full of optimism. 1.2...

Royal Ascot Preview 2013

The centrepiece of our flat season is almost upon us, this time of year when our thoroughbreds have illustrated enough talent on the racecourse they now gain a chance at landing a big prize at Her Majesty's Royal Ascot. My first preview blog of the meeting quite logical focuses on the first day and it's my pleasure to outline my thoughts on the week ahead starting tonight. The main news this week regarding Henry Cecil is extremely sad, as many have mentioned with wonderful prose regarding the publics favourite, a horse handler who cared for his animals with the midas touch and a trainer who had the ambition and determination to never say 'enoughs enough' even when he was down to around 40 horses in the early 2000's or the pressure and stress in his private life. He is and will always be remembered as a true gentleman and a phenomenal trainer. It's also worth noting that he had an absolute terryifyingly good record at Royal Ascot and it just wont be the same w...
