Glorious Goodwood: Canford Cliffs edges Rip Van Winkle to win Sussex Stakes

Canford Cliffs added to his Group One tally when reeling in Rip Van Winkle in the Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood in 2010. Can he do it again tomorrow?

A very exciting week in prospect the quality of racing this week is maaking my mouth water. I'm going right through the card for both meetings, as always I will make it clear just how difficult some of these races are and indeed hopefully give you a clear incite into my chosen horses.

Goodwood 1m 1f Handicap

In the opener these horses all share alot of similarities and you could argue the case for at least 4/5 finishing in the frame here. Low draw numbers are usually the way forward but not always essential as Drumfire showed a few years ago. With all that in mind I'm having two each way selections and I see no reason to think otherwise in this big field. Firstly Mick Channon trained the winner of this race back in 2007 in the shape of championship point who was a great horse for the yard and thats why my first selection is a little older but is currently showing some of the form of his life, HALICARNASSUS. This 7 year old ran a blinder at Haydock last time out and looks like it could pounce again at an nice price 14/1. This horse does have consistent placings at Goodwood and seems to enjoy it around here, my only concern is the draw and a strong gallop needs to be set in order for this horse to be in with a chance. Furthermore this horse has consistently run at a high level and is certainly not out of his depth amongst this lot. My other selection is more of a progressive type who has gone from strength to strength this season and thats Sir Henry Cecils 4 year old ALL ACTION. Yes the handicapper has raised this horse by 10lbs but I still think this horse can overcome this and be a real danger, with Tom Queally riding who undoubtedly needs a early confidence boost this horse will get the trip, has a nice draw and could be a potentially a very capable horse if it keeps improving.

2.35 Gordon Stakes 1m 4f

A very interesting race this and one I certainly am looking forward too. If we start with Mark Johnston horses I'm always impressed by the way they front run and usually stay on in the finish something the trainer has developed and something that punters shouldnt worry about if they see the jockey pumping along, the horses usually stay on. With that in mind I'm going to tip the biggest priced Mark Johnston horse and thats HURRICAN HIGGINS at a huge 28/1. The reason is I still believe this horse has much more to offer, is a beautifully bred Hurricane Run colt, I feel this trip will suit him down to the ground hasnt had an arduious season like so many have already at this time of year and yes maybe going with my heart but I was so impressed by his debut run and believe this lad has more to give.

3.10 Lennox Stakes. 7f

Strong Suit Strong Suit ridden by Richard Hughes lands The Jersey Stakes during day two of Royal Ascot at Ascot racecourse on June 15, 2011 in Ascot, England.I've tipped him before and I will again because there is no denying that this Richard Hannon trained colt is in the form of his life and I wouldnt tell anyone not to back it.STRONG SUIT will be the one to catch. Ran a blinder at Royal Ascot and again at Chantilly last time out, losing by only a very small margin. This horse has always been highly thought of by the yard and will again go close here. If Richard Hughes rides this horse like he did at Ascot nothing will be able to catch this electrifying 3 year old. I'm also going to tip RED JAZZ in this race, this 7 furlong specialist will be in the shake up, Barry Hills the trainer is coming into form of late having four winners in the last three days. RED JAZZ will love this track and the trip for me is the all important part each way cureently 8/1.

3.45 Molecomb Stakes 5f

Quite a few in with a chance some with excellent Royal Ascot form and others winning with conviction in what might be described as weaker races but still clocking quick times. I'm looking at the David Wachman Dansili colt REQUINTO watching its last race back at Tiperrary the horse was always in control travelling well on the bridle 2f out and never looked in danger at any stage of the race. Clocking a very encouraging time 57.84 seconds on yielding ground. You could argue what did he beat that day but a replication of this form I'm certain he wont be beaten. Wayne Lordan the jockey is also someone I hold in the highest of regard, a great pilot with a great horse = victory

4.20 Maiden Stakes 6f

Maidens are maidens over 6f and its difficult lets be honest. Limited form just the pedigree to go on so whats got a chance. Well, if I were to bet my money would be on SEQUOIA a good solid debut despite being switched for a run in the closing stages finished 4th and I'm sure will undoubtedly have progressd for that run. Nothing more to say not a race to get me excited.

4.50 1m Handicap

Interesting handicap and I'm sticking with the proverbial low draw runners. The one that jumps out straight away is the horse out of stall 7 ridden by Kieran Fallon MARAJAA. This horse has course and distance form something which is very important. This horse will get the trip and like the ground, could be a nice attractive price as well and will knoo its way around Goodwood.

5.25 5f Handicap

Dandy Nicholls has enjoyed plenty of success in this sprint and FATHOM FIVE can add another to his tally. He's been beaten on slow ground, but it was a fast surface when he was beaten less than a length at Epsom last month and a return to that sort of form gives him every chance here. Nicholl's is the best sprint trainer around and I have every belief that he will end his day on a high.

Have a look at the prices and go with what you feel! Enjoy the first day of Goodwood.

Grand National Selections.

How I'm feeling about the upcoming Grand National Neptune Collognes - 2012 Grand National hero This time of year never fails to stir the soul both tangibly and metaphorically. After the sun peeps it's head out from amongst the clouds, after the temperature rises, after the first buds are seen on the trees, after the restoration of vitamin d in our blood, after the taste of a crisp cider on a warm day hits the tongue, after many months of wearing trousers I can finally air the paler than white limbs of mine, after...after...after all that April is the month when a new grand national winner is crowned king of the toughest steeplechase in the world. I can safely say without hesitation that this years national is probably the most competitive yet, the handicapper has given everything a chance this year and I'm happy with the three selections that I'll be following. A real Christmas Cracker! Kempton Park Boxing Day.

The festive season has begun for me, sitting down with my Santa hat, a mince pie and a pint of guinness all points to a very content and relaxed feel to this weeks blogg. Merry Christmas everyone and boy we got some racing to look forward too. It's important to remember that with over three months or so before Cheltenham the trainers, owners, jocks and all us normal folk are looking forward to seeing a magnificient build up and thats why Boxing day at Kempton park is the place to be. On with the card... 12.50 Kempton 2m Hurdle It was nice to tip TETLAMI last time out at Sandown and I certainly wont be deserting this five year old just yet. Looked a picture in the paddock at Sandown, ran on strongly in the finish and will love softer ground than some of these if indeed it is on the softer side. Nicky Henderson showed his class in training this one to victory after a long lay off. I believe another win is possible and with Barry Geraghty on board I'm full of optimism. 1.2...

Royal Ascot Preview 2013

The centrepiece of our flat season is almost upon us, this time of year when our thoroughbreds have illustrated enough talent on the racecourse they now gain a chance at landing a big prize at Her Majesty's Royal Ascot. My first preview blog of the meeting quite logical focuses on the first day and it's my pleasure to outline my thoughts on the week ahead starting tonight. The main news this week regarding Henry Cecil is extremely sad, as many have mentioned with wonderful prose regarding the publics favourite, a horse handler who cared for his animals with the midas touch and a trainer who had the ambition and determination to never say 'enoughs enough' even when he was down to around 40 horses in the early 2000's or the pressure and stress in his private life. He is and will always be remembered as a true gentleman and a phenomenal trainer. It's also worth noting that he had an absolute terryifyingly good record at Royal Ascot and it just wont be the same w...
