Ascot Saturday July 23rd 2011

Very excited about Saturdays racing at Ascot and thats the card I'm sticking with from the word go this coming Saturday.

Race 1 Longines Handicap 7f

A nice handicap for the ladies to begin proceedings and a very well matched bunch to be honest. Let me start by saying that I am a little biased towards a few female jockeys here and thats not down to anything but there expertise in the saddle so I'm tipping two horses in this race solely on the jockey. Its fair to say that this has its pitfuls but I wont be going big on these and jockeyship in a race of this nature is crucial. Furthermore the form figures and handicapp rating amongst this lot is so close you could put the proverbial cigerette paper between them. So here are my two selections Katie Walsh in the saddle FIRST CAT and Nina Carberry the other on DIVINE CALL.

Race 2 2.05 Jaguar Winkfield Stakes 7f

So who's going to hose up here like a Jaguar well again a close call here but looking at the form and the way in which this horse won its last race at Sandown TALWAR looks the one to catch. Not only did that run look very easy for this Acclamation colt but the horse looks very progressive and will improve for that run. Jeremy Noseda is a shrewd trainer and a very likeable one at that and with his horses coming into form of late I'm happy to be on this flying machine.

Race 3 Princess Margarat 6f

RUSSELLIANA (NAP) is without queston the one to beat.. Looked like it was going to win last time out at Newmarket but beaten on that day by Gamiala. That form is strong, judging by the time of that 6f race looked a pretty speedy gallop but much more important than that is that if the ground is on the soft side this horse will love that!. Judging on the weather forecast this looks very likely indeed. The owner Sir Evelyn de Rothschild always seems to have a animal with a fair bit of quality on his hands, trained by Stoutey and ridden by Moore, it really is hard to see past this well bred filly.

Race 4 Deloitte Handicap 1m

Well here's another handicap favourite of mine, having won on Dont call Me last year at odds of 9/1 where do we find the magical value bet or is there no such thing!. Well lets look at the Godolphin runner. Its no secret that Godolphin horses are looking very well indeed at present and perhaps even more importantly it looks like Frankie is riding out of his skin at the moment. The ride on Blue Bunting last weekend was sensational and it might be worth looking at this progressive type who looks like a scopey kind who will progress and progress this season. I'm more than happy to tip MY FREEDOM at an each way price. The one major factor being the trip and ground conditions will love a bit of cut. My other probable bigger price runner is that of Andrew Balding's, a yard in great nick. This horse is stepping up in class but I loved the way this horse motored away at Sandown last time out and certainly deserves his place in this race, again another progressive individual and my other bet each way is STAGE ATTRACTION.

3.50 7F SPRINT

Well here's a tricky contest always is and always will be. Do we go draw, standside? Well here are my two individuals firsly MANASSAS I'm willing to put a line through its last run and give this horse a chance. Ran well over 7f in two previous starts and looks the kind of consistent horse Brian Meehan can train. Has course and distance win and solid form here at Ascot, now blinkered first time. If this horse goes off at near 14/1 that is a steal get on! The other is a Koukoash owned horse BRAE HILL ran a blinder at Newmarket last time out and again will be a nice price here each way squeak.

4.30 The King George IV Queen Elizabeth Stakes

Four quality animals! For me this is a make your mind up easy equation it goes like this 1m4f + Soft Ground + Class + Experience = WORKFORCE. Dont get me wrong the others are quality animals in there own right but this horse is an Arc winner and the battle hardened mentality goes along way in my book. You can argue that St Nicholas Abbey will be his main contender but lets be honest that horse is not proven against a proven top level horse like WORKFORCE. I'm afraid my mind is so firmly on him you want sway me with any argument. Rewilding for me will still feel the effects of that tough race against so you think last time out and Nathaniel is not quite up to this level.

Grand National Selections.

How I'm feeling about the upcoming Grand National Neptune Collognes - 2012 Grand National hero This time of year never fails to stir the soul both tangibly and metaphorically. After the sun peeps it's head out from amongst the clouds, after the temperature rises, after the first buds are seen on the trees, after the restoration of vitamin d in our blood, after the taste of a crisp cider on a warm day hits the tongue, after many months of wearing trousers I can finally air the paler than white limbs of mine, after...after...after all that April is the month when a new grand national winner is crowned king of the toughest steeplechase in the world. I can safely say without hesitation that this years national is probably the most competitive yet, the handicapper has given everything a chance this year and I'm happy with the three selections that I'll be following. Grand National Selections: Selection 1: Onenightinvienna  Trained by Philip Hobbs ...

A real Christmas Cracker! Kempton Park Boxing Day.

The festive season has begun for me, sitting down with my Santa hat, a mince pie and a pint of guinness all points to a very content and relaxed feel to this weeks blogg. Merry Christmas everyone and boy we got some racing to look forward too. It's important to remember that with over three months or so before Cheltenham the trainers, owners, jocks and all us normal folk are looking forward to seeing a magnificient build up and thats why Boxing day at Kempton park is the place to be. On with the card... 12.50 Kempton 2m Hurdle It was nice to tip TETLAMI last time out at Sandown and I certainly wont be deserting this five year old just yet. Looked a picture in the paddock at Sandown, ran on strongly in the finish and will love softer ground than some of these if indeed it is on the softer side. Nicky Henderson showed his class in training this one to victory after a long lay off. I believe another win is possible and with Barry Geraghty on board I'm full of optimism. 1.2...

Royal Ascot Preview 2013

The centrepiece of our flat season is almost upon us, this time of year when our thoroughbreds have illustrated enough talent on the racecourse they now gain a chance at landing a big prize at Her Majesty's Royal Ascot. My first preview blog of the meeting quite logical focuses on the first day and it's my pleasure to outline my thoughts on the week ahead starting tonight. The main news this week regarding Henry Cecil is extremely sad, as many have mentioned with wonderful prose regarding the publics favourite, a horse handler who cared for his animals with the midas touch and a trainer who had the ambition and determination to never say 'enoughs enough' even when he was down to around 40 horses in the early 2000's or the pressure and stress in his private life. He is and will always be remembered as a true gentleman and a phenomenal trainer. It's also worth noting that he had an absolute terryifyingly good record at Royal Ascot and it just wont be the same w...
