Derby Day 2011!

So the time has come and the talking will stop at 4.00pm today, a hugely anticipated day of racing and not just at the lovely Epsom track. Below I'm going to stick my neck out again and go through the card at Epsom and two from Musselburgh.

 Fallon's bad judgement.

All talk at present is on Kieran Fallon, a very troublesome few years for Kieran and its a real shame its ended up this way but in life you have to keep your word, particularly when in a situation as high profile as this. However, it always makes me slightly annoyed when people can be perceived as 'calling the pot kettle black' it really irritates me when people talk as if they always follow the righteous path when with hindsight we can all make mistakes. Kieran has made a bad decision, he has to live with that but I reckon he'll definitely make the most of his rides to day thats a sure thing!.
So the card today

Race 1 my selection is a non runner now so leaving that race alone.

Race 2 6f sprint

Some interesting 2yo runners here who have all shown some excellent for in their maiden races. I am a big fan of Kevin Ryan and his strikerate this season is very good particualrly in the last two weeks just under a third of his horses winning out of 42 runners. This horse has plenty of speed, will progress from his previous run and is at a very nice each way price 15/2 at present. ON THE DARK SIDE.

Race 3 2.40 1m

Very interesting mix amongst this bunch, the highest rated Rio De La Plata has a massive chance for Dettori and even with the break this horse has had you just know Godolphin will have him firmly ready for this, gotta have a chance. However PREMIO LOCO (NAP) looks the one to beat, yes he's the favourite and it may not be the most original of selections but this horse is nothing but consistent and solid in all his recent performance. George Baker is a phenomenal pilot in all the horses performances to date and his performance when 3 lengths behing Canford Cliffs in his last start illustrates this horses quality. My NAP for today!

Race 4 3.15 The Dash!

Have had a soft spot for this race ever since I had an each way on Indian Trail a couple of years ago. That horse runs again but in my opinion wont win not least because of his current form. I have a real contender to win this 2011 renewal and that comes in the shape of MASAMAH blazed an absolute trail of distruction in his last run coming in on a time of 56.58s trained by Kevin Ryan who I mentioned earlier at 6/1 if your not sure go each way, I'll stick my neck out and say a place is almost guaranteed!. However the sprint trainer genius Dandy Nicholls has quite a few in this race, this guy is an absolute legend at getting his horses right for a race like this so I'll be playing FALASTEEN E/W 6/1 also.

Race 5 4.00 The 2011 Derby

For the professional gamblers out there this really isnt a betting proposition because of the question marks over the trip, course, ground and the atmosphere!. But thats what the Derby's all about! Exciting anticipation!!. Lets start with the two French raiders, both nicely bred, both notching up wins and trained by the two top trainers in French racing. The two horse in question are Vadamar and Pour Moi in my opinion I cant see them winning. The ground in France is alot easier that it will be today, I'm not totally impressed by who these horses have beaten and I'm afraid not up to scratch in a horse such as this. The same can be said about Native Khan ran a credble race in the 2000 Guineas bt that being over a mile I'm not convinced this horse will get the trip of 1m 4f. So where to turn? How about Recital the Irish raider? Not for me two reasons Kieran Fallon knows Epsom like the back of his hand and is now not riding this horse, secondly I wasnt impressed by this quirky Montjeu Colt when in its last run had an awkward head carriage, looked a very tricky ride and actually looked like it wanted to go through the rails. That sort of run will definitely not suit a track like Epsom. I'm afraid I'm turning to CARLTON HOUSE, in terms of form has it in the book, jockey Ryan Moore a massive massive plus, breeding not overly convinced but Sir Michael Stoute is an amazing trainer, people talk about the injury this horse sustained earlier this week but I'm convinced someone of Michael calibre and knowledge would not run a horse if it was not 100% ready. I'll be cheering home the Queens horse. Finally Dante form coming into this race is another massive plus even if it was a muddling paced race.

MUSSELBURGH

2.45

ES QUE LOVE steps up in grade but such was the nature of his dynamic success in a Beverley conditions event that he is hard to oppose. This horse trained by Mark Johnson yet again is sure to go close. I'm sure this trainer is in for a very successful day!

3.45

A massive price in this race for a very solid performer who is a little classier than the others at a nice 12/1 each way price is Namibian. Ran some very credible races stepping down in Class and is sure to make the frame here. This Cape Cross colt will take a bit of pegging back in my view I just hope Greg Fairly rides him handy. This is also another strong fancy of mine!

GOOD LUCK ALL!!

Grand National Selections.

How I'm feeling about the upcoming Grand National Neptune Collognes - 2012 Grand National hero This time of year never fails to stir the soul both tangibly and metaphorically. After the sun peeps it's head out from amongst the clouds, after the temperature rises, after the first buds are seen on the trees, after the restoration of vitamin d in our blood, after the taste of a crisp cider on a warm day hits the tongue, after many months of wearing trousers I can finally air the paler than white limbs of mine, after...after...after all that April is the month when a new grand national winner is crowned king of the toughest steeplechase in the world. I can safely say without hesitation that this years national is probably the most competitive yet, the handicapper has given everything a chance this year and I'm happy with the three selections that I'll be following. A real Christmas Cracker! Kempton Park Boxing Day.

The festive season has begun for me, sitting down with my Santa hat, a mince pie and a pint of guinness all points to a very content and relaxed feel to this weeks blogg. Merry Christmas everyone and boy we got some racing to look forward too. It's important to remember that with over three months or so before Cheltenham the trainers, owners, jocks and all us normal folk are looking forward to seeing a magnificient build up and thats why Boxing day at Kempton park is the place to be. On with the card... 12.50 Kempton 2m Hurdle It was nice to tip TETLAMI last time out at Sandown and I certainly wont be deserting this five year old just yet. Looked a picture in the paddock at Sandown, ran on strongly in the finish and will love softer ground than some of these if indeed it is on the softer side. Nicky Henderson showed his class in training this one to victory after a long lay off. I believe another win is possible and with Barry Geraghty on board I'm full of optimism. 1.2...

Royal Ascot Preview 2013

The centrepiece of our flat season is almost upon us, this time of year when our thoroughbreds have illustrated enough talent on the racecourse they now gain a chance at landing a big prize at Her Majesty's Royal Ascot. My first preview blog of the meeting quite logical focuses on the first day and it's my pleasure to outline my thoughts on the week ahead starting tonight. The main news this week regarding Henry Cecil is extremely sad, as many have mentioned with wonderful prose regarding the publics favourite, a horse handler who cared for his animals with the midas touch and a trainer who had the ambition and determination to never say 'enoughs enough' even when he was down to around 40 horses in the early 2000's or the pressure and stress in his private life. He is and will always be remembered as a true gentleman and a phenomenal trainer. It's also worth noting that he had an absolute terryifyingly good record at Royal Ascot and it just wont be the same w...
